HT Review: John Zorn @ St. Ann’s Warehouse

Up until Friday night, I had never had the pleasure of seeing the legendary John Zorn, play or conduct. The debut of his upcoming album The Dreamers in at St. Ann’s Warehouse was well worth the wait.

I should start by admitting that I am not too familiar with Zorn’s music. I think I first heard of the saxophonist/composer while on the Medeski Martin and Wood listserv; and for whatever reason, I was prejudiced simply because of his associations with “noise” or “squonk.” These past few years, though, I have grown to enjoy Masada when I hear it. And just this past year, I have really appreciated his 2001 album The Gift, which I was first turned on to by WNYC’s John Schaefer late one night. The Gift is a gem of an album, combining world music with Marc Ribot-lead surf rock — with a bit of everything else mixed in. Quite melodic and even quiet.
