We’re honored to run this John Zorn review written by Jeremy Welsh. Jeremy comes to NYC via Pittsburgh and South Bend, and we hope to run more of his in-depth reviews in the future…

I should start by admitting that I am not too familiar with Zorn’s music. I think I first heard of the saxophonist/composer while on the Medeski Martin and Wood listserv; and for whatever reason, I was prejudiced simply because of his associations with “noise” or “squonk.” These past few years, though, I have grown to enjoy Masada when I hear it. And just this past year, I have really appreciated his 2001 album The Gift, which I was first turned on to by WNYC’s John Schaefer late one night. The Gift is a gem of an album, combining world music with Marc Ribot-lead surf rock — with a bit of everything else mixed in. Quite melodic and even quiet. (I have never really delved into his soundtrack or more exotica music.) Read on for more of Jeremy’s review…

Bassist Pete Novembre lives in Santa Cruz, CA… keyboardist Brian Felix in Chicago, IL… and drummer Ilya Stemkovsky in Lakewood, NJ. When the opportunity to come together and play our first concerts in over three years arose, naturally, we knew we would have limited rehearsal time. Read on…
