As we reach the end of the decade it seems like a good time to take a look at the one hit wonders of the ’00s. Finding commercial success isn’t easy and it certainly isn’t a slight on the quality of a band’s music if they score one hit and never find the top of the charts again. Some of these bands (Los Lonely Boys, Fountains of Wayne) are extremely talented while others came up with a catchy hook that propelled them to success (Baha Men, Afroman).
Let’s take a look at what we came up with…
1. Los Lonely Boys – Heaven
This Texican rock trio of brothers scored big with their debut single but haven’t produced another hit since Heaven came out in 2005.

In our never-ending quest to dig up some great bands that cost less than a corned beef sandwich at Katz’s Deli, we bring you another round of Blips. Blips highlights some great bands that are largely still in their larvae stage, but will soon morph into their beautiful butterfly. In this edition, we have some really cool new music, so take a sec, poke around their various websites, and see what you think of these two under the radar musical groups…
Dawes
If you’re looking for that next band to fit comfortably in your record collection next to My Morning Jacket, Band Of Horses and Fleet Foxes than look no further than the California act Dawes. Drenched in exquisite harmonies, pedal steel flourishes, acoustic guitar strumming and aching lyrics about heartbreak the band makes quintessential West Coast country-rock drawing influences from the likes of Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Crazy Horse and The Eagles.
Dawes’ ATO debut, North Hills, which hits stores next month (though currently available now as a digital download), is loaded with their hazy laments providing quite possibly the perfect sunrise soundtrack as you throw back that last night cap. The band recently wrapped up a cross-country run opening for Deer Tick and have a handful of dates currently on deck with weekly residency shows at the Echo and Detroit Bar.

This is the pop-up video version of the 1997 video…
After patiently waiting over four years for Phish to reunite, we admit, we got a little excited. Now with two legs of a summer tour behind us and the Hampton shows feeling like they were actually about four years ago, it’s time to regroup and look around a little. Our other favorite bands have been playing too and it’s time to see what we missed.
Sure, Phish may have snagged the headlines throughout the summer, but there have been no shortage of big shows and bust outs around the horn, so lets share the wealth and see what’s been going down.
Frog Legs – The Disco Biscuits, Mariaville, NY 7/18/09
Billed as “The Perfume vs. Tractorbeam” at this summer’s Camp Bisco, the Disco Biscuits treated fans to a set of instrumental non-stop jamming and creative twists on their originals. Don’t quote me on this, but essentially Tractorbeam plays jammed out lyricless Disco Biscuits mayhem, whereas The Perfume takes the existing material and transforms it into alternative genres like honky tonk, techno, hip hop, etc. Here we have a sample from the Perfume in the form of a fun “Devo” version of Frog Legs.
Mantis Ghetts – Umphrey’s McGee, Des Moines, IA 7/15/09
Presumably named as such because it would make for some mean backround music to a ghetto gangsta rap tune (or not), Umphrey’s McGee busted out Mantis Ghetts for the first time ever at the great highway 80 food oasis, Des Moines, Iowa. Mantis Ghetts made for an exciting bust out as its only previous circulation came in level 8 of the special downloads made available by the bands innovative PUSH technology in conjunction with the recent studio release of Mantis. This all-instrumental beat-driven jam maintains the same dark feeling throughout, but remains fresh all the while with dueling guitar melodies, a big buildup, and an eerie keyboard lullabye to close it out.
