John Medeski – Radiolarian Era

It should come as no surprise that, in conversation as in his playing, John Medeski is quick to respond and makes his points emphatically though never heavy handedly. As one third of Medeski Martin & Wood, the keyboardist has played an integral role in exploratory work that has rendered jazz ultra-contemporary while never losing sight (or grasp) of the genre’s roots. Like his two musical partners, Medeski has made the time to contribute to any number of side-projects over the years as both musician and producer, collaborating with The Word, The Campbell Brothers and The Will Bernard Group.

Mates of State/Black Kids: Indepedent, San Francisco, CA 4/20/09

Regretfully I must attribute my inability to connect during the Mates of State show to my own personal shortcomings. It could not have been the atmosphere: love, no doubt, was in the air. One of the things that the two non-Chicagoans on the trip requested was a legendary food place in Chicago that we may not have gone to if we had not been with a local. The place my friend selected was Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park Illinois.

We each had a beef and sausage combo with hot and sweet peppers followed by a homemade lemon Italian Ice. The moistness of the beef, paired with the hot sausage and both hot & sweet peppers was just an explosion of flavor that I had not gotten from many dishes in a long time. This sandwich upon the first bite immediately vaulted itself into becoming one of my top 3 favorite sandwiches I crave and consider the best around. The other two in case you are curious are Tony Luke’s Cheesesteak with whiz, hot peppers, sautéed onions and The Millburn Deli‘s Monster Joe with Corned Beef, Pastrami and Swiss.
