Coachella 2009 kicks off shortly and for those of us who can’t make it out to Indio, we can check in on the action through AT&T Music’s webcast.

The schedule for tonight includes HT favorites Alberta Cross, Conor Oberst and Paul McCartney. Rumor has it Ringo Starr will join his old Beatle bandmate at some point during Macca’s set. Tomorrow, you can stream performances by a wealth of artists including Dr. Dog, MIA, Calexico and the Drive-by Truckers. Okerrvil River, The Cure, Jenny Lewis and Public Enemy are among the performances being webcast by AT&T on Sunday.

When I saw the bill of Telepath, Eliot Lipp and Joe Nice on the schedule for April 9 at NYC’s Sullivan Hall, I knew I should attend this show. I was introduced to grime and dubstep through the music of Mathhead/Passions and Curses/Drop the Lime, co-founders of the Trouble and Bass collective. For a while, I have thought that the hippie culture might be saved from obscurity through the incorporation of dance music and electronica.

Jambands have been inflicted with stereotypes that no longer hold true. The word jamband does not work anymore and could be used synonymously with “improvisational music” or “live music.” Dance music serves the purpose of relieving stress and creating a sense of well being, which is the same thing that drives the live music industry. What these three acts all have in common is that they are all skilled and unique musicians who put on a great live show.

Musicians like Telepath, Eliot Lipp and Joe Nice are contributing to our happy family of live music lovers, helping to bring good music to a new audience made up of brightly colored, flat brimmed freaks, in their own right. Though this culture has a slightly stronger emphasis on consumerism, it might balance out the crusty, radical hippie ideals that got this music tossed aside in the first place. Though it’s not like it ever really mattered what the mainstream thought anyway.

Once again, Always Hungry brings us the goods on where to eat in NYC. We all get out of live shows after midnight or way after sometimes and we want to go somewhere to grab a bite. I am hoping to check the brunch out in the near future, maybe on 4/20 after the Pete Rock show at the Hudson Hotel.

There have been plenty of songs written about nearly every member of the Animal Kingdom, but have you ever noticed that monkeys get an inordinate amount of love? Some of the greatest songs in the history of rock involve primates. Often it’s symbolic as it is in Aerosmith’s Monkey on My Back, which is a song Steven Tyler and Joe Perry wrote about drug addiction.

10. Theme From The Monkees – The Monkees

The four leads in an NBC sitcom entitled The Monkees were introduced to the world in 1966 through a theme song written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Mickey Dolenz was the only one of the four Monkees to actually perform on the track.

9. Proudest Monkey – Dave Matthews Band

Proudest Monkey came out of an impromptu jam the band played as a soundcheck for a gig at Williams College in 1993. The song went through many changes before it was recorded for 1996’s Crash. After being shelved for a number of years, Proudest Monkey has gotten plenty of love from Dave and the band in 2006 and 2008.

8. Monkey Wrench – Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters avoided the sophomore slump in a big way with the release of The Colour and The Shape in 1997. Among the gems on the classic album is the anthemic My Hero, Dave Letterman’s favorite song – Everlong and this quick and catchy rocker that still gets tons of airplay on rock radio 12 years later.
