Last Week’s Sauce: November 9th – 15th

Last Week’s Sauce features recordings of shows from the previous week. Thanks to prof_peabody – who had the lead singer of Los Campesinos roll up to his mic stand, lower it, and then sing it into it – for this week’s photo.

Artist & Title: Chris Barron – How Could You Want Him When You Know You Could Have Me
Date & Venue: 2009-11-12 The Mint, Los Angeles CA
Taper & Show Download: David Landsberger

It’s not very often I’ll repeat the same song on Last Week’s Sauce, but as I was doing my normal cruising around my download sites – I saw this solo acoustic show from the Spin Doctors’ Chris Barron. And I saw that he must have given a very lengthy introduction to the Spin Doctors tune I featured in September in this feature. Not only is the story mildly interesting, but the arrangement Barron plays is quite different than the one you are used to hearing. Barron next plays at Davinci’s Pub in Collegville, PA on December 4th with his band The Time Bandits.

Brock Butler Plays Graceland on Jam Cruise 5

Name / JC8 Gig: Brock Butler / Solo Performer
Band: Perpetual Groove
Past Jam Cruise Experience: Perpetual Groove (JC3, JC5, JC6) Solo (JC7)
2009: Solo Album – Lately Here Though, PGroove Album – Heal

Hidden Track: How much has Jam Cruise changed from your first cruise to last year’s cruise?

Brock Butler: The first year we played Jam Cruise, there was a vibe similar to going to camp–the coolest camp ever mind you. I remember not knowing a good deal of the faces I was seeing, I had been on a cruise before, so seeing the ship was fun , but watching my comrades enjoy the size and treats of our vessel was about as much fun too.

Cut to the end of the trip – you have jammed with musicians you never thought you might jam with, played blackjack with Ivan Neville and leave torn up at the realization you wont be seeing your new friends on a daily basis. After a few trips back on board, it’s just as much fun. The vibe now being more a reunion than a group of strangers, you can spot the virgins. Look on the schedule to see who you want to say hello to, if they might be up to letting you sit in again, hell, would they like to sit in with you? Any year I’m unable to go would be a heart breaker. I think that sums that up.

Crash Kings

LA based trio, Crash Kings, are putting their own unique spin on the three-man-band concept.  Fusing keyboard-born compositions with agressive layers of rock, their crafty tunes are accomplished without the hint of a guitar.  Incorporating a clavinet (a keyboard with guitar strings) outfitted through a distortion pedal, the result is an arsenal of innovative and rich sound.
