I’ll be the first to admit I really don’t know too much about jazz, having only scratched the surface of the somewhat daunting genre mostly based on recommendations from friends
The Mike Gordon Band spent the last few days in California, where the group kicked off a month-long tour with a pair of sold-out shows and a free performance at the historic corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco.
On Saturday at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, Mike and his solo band tore through a number of songs from his recently released Moss album as well as cover debuts from the likes of Tower of Power (Down to the Nightclub), David Essex (Rock On), Little Feat (Sailin’ Shoes) and a new tune called I Miss My Mind plus an intense version of the GRAB-era chestnut Suskind Hotel.
Sunday found the ensemble moving up the coast to San Francisco for the previously mentioned free show – where the MGB performed five originals – and a sold out gig at The Independent. Cactus busted out his band’s version of Lit O Bit – a Rita Clarke & The Naturals song that Phish performed at Great Woods back in June – and debuted The Void off of Moss as part of the two set performance.

Kelley Stoltz has put together a snappy collection of 50’s-60’s dreamy garage-pop with his most recent effort To Dreamers. Echo vocals, glimmering tambourines, a dash of feedback and random horns all come and go like the breeze as Kelley sings about “getting the girl” and “all of our stars aligning”. The retro vibe is obvious, but this album was certainly produced in the digital age with clear sound and at times too many instruments/sounds trying to make a mark like on “Keeping the Flame”.
Raul Malo and his band made a stop at Johnny D’s supporting his new album, Saints and Sinners. The club’s space is well suited to his music, has just enough bar area, just enough dance floor for the 300 plus standing room only crowd, who danced and clapped from the start.
It was chilly air and cloudy skies during the day, but Widespread Panic was sure to warm everybody up and make it a beautiful night. The up-tempo and loose “Wondering” soared like a sports car going 90 miles an hour on an open highway, while the heavy thunder of “Imitation Leather Shoes” hit like a Mack truck crashing 90 miles an hour into a brick wall.
Public Domain (Spire Artists) is the follow-up to Charlie Hunter’s first such album, 2000’s Solo 8-String Guitar, now long out of print on disc from Contra Punto Records (though still available as a download). As indicated by its title, this new work consists of largely familiar tunes, all of which have been around long enough for their copyrights to expire (as stipulated by law, after seventy years). In doing justice to the material in his own imitable fashion, however, Hunter insures the songs will retain their indelible mark on contemporary culture.
On December 14th, JEMP Records will release Alpine Valley 2010, a two-DVD/two-audio CD collection capturing Phish’s entire August 14th, 2010 performance at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI.
