As much gifted composer as he is exhilarating collaborator, Marco Benevento has been amplifying each of his eclectic projects with a striking sonic palette for years. So it's no shock that his fourth studio effort, Tiger Face, finds him expanding the canvas with fresh compositions and a who's who of guest musicians.
After 15 years with Sevendust, guitar player John Connolly has finally stepped out of his comfort zone to take his vocal chords for a test drive on their own. Along with his longtime friends – bandmate Vince Hornsby, Alter Bridge/Creed drummer Scott Phillips and Creed touring guitarist/vocalist Eric “Erock” Friedman – Connolly took what was supposed to be something more solo yet found the energy and chemistry too strong to keep under wraps in his Florida recording studio.
The husband and wife team of Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish have crafted a classic country duet album in How Do You Plead? that should have Americana experts step up and take instant notice. With a top of the line backing band which has played with everyone from Elvis Costello to Van Morrison, the duo pour sawdust and tears into every honky-tonkin’ sad song they present here.
While Tycho's songs sounded faithful to the album versions to someone who has listened to Dive several times, there seems to be a touch of improvisation to the performance. Surely, Scott Hansen is meticulous in his approach, but the songs feel more organic than those of someone standing at a laptop, and live bass and drums take the show far beyond typical ambient music, especially with the bass turned up so high. Tycho creates a euphoric atmosphere using organic rhythms, warm tones from vintage synths and ethereal visuals.
Niki and the Dove are an electro-pop trio from Stockholm, Sweden. Their first full length, Instinct, was recently released on Seattle’s legendary Sub Pop Records. The band generated significant blog hype last year with their first single “DJ, Ease My Mind”, a piece of jack-nugget ear candy that makes a lush and ominous case for the healing power of the dance floor.
Glide Magazine recently spoke with Alex Wong about his new album, the path he’s taken from toddler to adult, his time with Vienna Teng, what excites him about being a producer for acts like Delta Rae, Melissa Ferrick and Ari Hest, and above all what it’s like to make a name for yourself in a business that celebrates innovation and individuality but doesn’t exactly make it the easiest to navigate the many, many pitfalls of a life as an artist.
As much as an entertainer Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter is, it’s more so his skill as a businessman and entrepreneur that gave him the accessibility to curate the Budweiser Made In America celebration in Philadelphia this past Labor Day weekend.
Boot-stomping “sloppy tonk” duo from South Carolina, Shovels & Rope played to a packed room at the Mercury Lounge on August 23rd along with opener Christopher Paul Stelling.
Herring fans often wish the note-mongering master would strike out on his own more often, and this intimate-sounding album should give them plenty to chew on for a while.
