With the final act of day two hitting the stage, one would wonder –How can Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule take it up yet another notch? How about opening with a reggae version of Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker”. As the crowd quickly erupts into an impromptu “woo-wooo”, it was easy to see how the often touted hardest working man in the biz was not going to have a problem.

Though many, possibly all, may have overestimated Purity Ring’s “undergroundedness,” that belief was nearly instantly shattered when the duo not only sold out the venue, but led fans to scrounge for entrance days prior and pack themselves inside the day of. Ultimately this type of adulation labeled the Crescent show deservingly as, “Oh, you weren’t there? You should have been,” kind of performance in downtown Phoenix.

Yet his blistering fret work as the frontman for Ten Years After continues to resonate through the steel strings of such modern-day mavericks as Jack White, Dan Auerbach and Guy Davis Jr. as adroitly as fellow Brits Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, whom the guitarist should be placed alongside more regularly in terms of his influence on the art of those who came after him.

Within the coziness of the 300-plus seat Manship Theatre, Lindsey Buckingham walked out with a seriousness that normally proceeds a symphony performance, picked up one of the dozen guitars he had lined up behind him, and took the audience on a carousel of notes with a staunch authoritativeness. If you were expecting a rock concert, you guessed wrong. Tonight Buckingham was in artiste mode, creating masterful chord changes with his bare fingers, forgoing a pick in favor of the intimacy a piece of flesh can convey.

Field Report

Talk to any aspiring artist and you can bet that they would sell every scrap of hair off their head (and nostrils for that matter) for any kind of big break. For Field Report, perhaps it was a series of well-received gigs in March at South by Southwest or maybe it was opening for Counting Crowes this past summer or was it was once being in band with some guy Justin Vernon? The funny thing is, Field Report never even played a show before this year’s SXSW; there must be something in the lyrics.
