Sam Bush is best-known for his prodigious skills on the mandolin and the fiddle, but it would be a mistake to label him simply a bluegrass musician. Throughout his years with the New Grass Revival, the Nash Ramblers and Strength in Numbers, he’s explored a wide swath of traditional American music, and his cross-genre blending has continued with the many iterations of his solo band over the years.

It is a marvel how bands with virtually no radio play can come to town and fill a venue with fans who know every word to their songs. Obviously I underestimate the internet and to a lesser extent non-commercial FM stations. Whatever the source of their connection, the Carolina Chocolate Drops; Dom Flemons, Justin Robinson, and Rhiannon Giddens, fit that description.

And the same could be said about Keller Williams and the Keels' new release, aptly titled Thief, if it were not for the oddly redeeming but sparkling choices presented in this collection.

Dan Tyminski’s rise to fame came through years of touring as a vocalist and guitarist for bluegrass megastars, Alison Krauss and The Union Station. Then, a few years back, he became a household name when he was thrust into the spotlight as the vocalist for the hit single, "Man of Constant Sorrow," from the hit movie, O Brother Where Art Thou?. With his second solo release, Wheels, Dan Tyminski creates an ensemble of virtuoso pickers to compliment his strong tenor voice without ever getting in the way of the song.

Following the release of their newest album Amen Corner, Railroad Earth took their west coast tour through Portland’s Crystal Ballroom on June 20th to ring in the summer solstice in style. In teaming up with Portland’s own prankster production team of Peak Experience, RRE decided to bring more than just their own special sound to the mix; they brought a horn section, a rocking guest guitarist in the form of Scott Law, a top notch opening act of Greensky Bluegrass, and more eye candy and costumes than most shows this side of Ringling Brothers.

n rock and roll debates 101, Robert Plant arguablys hold the greatest rock and roll voice. Sure Steven Tyler, Bono, Roger Daltrey, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie and Mick Jagger are up there too, but its not even worth arguing. On even Simon Cowell’s list, Robert Plant is top five and his voice can do things that make 55 year old grown men in attendance jump the stage (which happened this evening in Phoenix) and 30 year old woman pass roses to the voice of rock and roll’s most iconic songs.

Railroad Earth: Amen Corner

Railroad Earth’s fourth studio album, Amen Corner, blends their recipe of Americana with sprinkles of bluegrass and hints of country all over. After listening to the album, it is hard to believe that Railroad Earth has only been together since 2001, despite the fact that the band is comprised of seasoned touring musicians.
