Of course, the 48-year-old singer of the Flaming Lips doesn’t feel very comfortable discussing art. In fact, every time he uses the word, he makes sure you know that he knows that it’s all just a bunch of bullshit. But, the fact remains: Coyne and the Lips are responsible for elevating pop music to the status of art – whether it be an album that requires the listener to play four discs on four stereos at the same time (Zaireeka), or one of the greatest musical creations of the 20th century (The Soft Bulletin).

This is a huge organic blob of an album. The Flaming Lips have never been shy about their grandiose tendencies (Zaireeka) and this one flashes them all, making it impossible to absorb upon the first few listens. Embryonic is a double disk in a day in age when singles seem to be clocking in at less than 2 minutes, a bit out of place in the time realm, but smack dab on the cutting edge when it comes to the music. Chock full of sound Embryonic bombards the listener with twitches and musical gleeks over distorted drums strings and chimes. It is an audio genetic soup in there, and that’s what the album seems to be getting at.

Rock concerts are supposed to be unpredictable. The day you see a band and know exactly what is going to happen before you attend the show should be the day you stop seeing live music. When the torrential monsoon of rain halted the Flaming Lips show on August 29th at Philly’s Festival Pier, some complained while others just accepted that this kind of mayhem is the way of the rock world. What this creative force from Oklahoma was able to squeeze in offered us a glimpse of the past and future from a group going strong since 1983.
