TheTrio of Oz: The Trio of Oz

Discovering The Trio of OZ via their debut album has been one of those unexpected pleasures that happens every once in a while. I didn’t see this one coming, boys and girls – but I’m glad it did. Pianist Rachel Z, drummer Omar Hakim, and bassist Maeve Royce have laid down a jam-laden jazz album chock full of emotion and life. Some of the jams captured here take you through more twists and turns than the average feature-length movie: tension that gives way to wistful sweetness or jump-in-the-air joy, with enough peaks and dips and drifts and glides to hook you in and make you want to find out just where the thing is going next.

Soulive: Rubber Soulive

Rubber Soulive is an album full of tunes done for the exactly right reason: total love for the subject at hand. Add in the groove factor and you have one great piece of work.

This is far from a stylistic departure for Krasno as his knack for the groove comes through as sharp as ever, which, for most, is a good thing.

Supporting their most recent effort Power Patriot that came out in late 2009 on the stellar Royal Potato Family label, Garage A Trois made no reservations about being playing the part of entertainers. With two one hour sets, the quartet put whimsicality and energy first, while placing compositional perfection somewhere down the priority line, but it didn’t matter – this is a live band and these four guys toss any preconceived jazz notions by way of prog and rock leanings.

To give you an idea of the magnitude of Orchestrion and how Pat Metheny’s system works, imagine a controlled orchestra that at times can respond only to the input of one single instrument, in this case the guitar. Each instrument is programmed and synchronized to react to what is played on Metheny’s guitar or previously composed and similarly he has the ability to control which instruments are playing at a given time. Last Tuesday was no ordinary show when Pat Metheny brought the tour through the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA to an audience that was curious to see the virtuoso in a different element.

Marco Benevento: Between The Needles and Nightfall

Whether you choose to label it a form of jazz fusion or sonically controlled chaos, there’s no doubt that Marco Benevento’s style of expression is a world of improvisation. It’s always been the improv side of music that gives way for more diverse chemistry between musicians which is no different on Benevento’s third full-length release, Between the Needles and Nightfall. The record itself seems to have more of a live feel and you can feel the interaction between the rhythm section and the effective lead piano.
