The Smashing Pumpkins: Oceania

For a period of time The Smashing Pumpkins looked like they had the potential to be the next U2; Corgan shares Bono’s gift for creating over-the-top anthems that hit their mark, although the lyrical content is dark and mysterious instead of straightforward and earnest. For a variety of reasons The Smashing Pumpkins imploded before this could happen, and at this point it most likely never will, but “Oceania” is a strong return to form for a band that could do wonders to help revive a struggling rock n roll scene.

B List: 11 Bands w/ Only One Original Member

The ownership of band names is a tricky subject, which has filled the wallets of many lawyers thanks to the dozens of lawsuits filed over the years. As the groups of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s start to age, many acts have had to figure out who has the right to tour under the original name. This week’s B List looks at 11 groups with only one original member left in the band as of 2011.

There’s a variety of reasons why there’s only one member left in these bands. Some of the groups are a band in name only and are really a solo vehicle, some have lost members due to death and illness, while others splintered due to lawsuits and bad business decisions. Here’s our list…

11. Iron Maiden

Steve Harris – Bass

The leader of Iron Maiden started the band in 1975 as a 19-year-old in London. Over the past 35+ years, Maiden has gone through a number of lineup changes with Harris left as the only person who has been a member of Iron Maiden since the group’s inception. Guitarist Dave Murray, who remains with the band, joined Maiden just just two months after they formed.

The B List: 10 Artists Phish Forgot

When Phish posted 99 possible albums on Phish.com – of which one would ultimately be chosen as the Halloween Costume set – it seemed they nailed all the usual suspects and some not-so-usual ones as well. A closer look at the proposed records shows they may have missed a few.

While those listed below would by no means guarantee a selection had they been included, it was a bit surprising and sad to see a few left off the list. I mean, couldn’t they at least given us the chance to have our hopes and dreams crushed when these artists got the axe?

1. Paul Simon

gaceland

One of the biggest names in music inexplicably left off the list. Where’s Graceland or Rhythm of the Saints? Is Ladysmith Black Mambazo not available? [ed. note – they were not available] Sure the albums would be no easy feats to pull off, but I always considered that part of the fun.

Tinted Windows – Round Table With James Iha, Taylor Hanson & Adam Schlesinger

When you throw the term super group around, the tendency is to dwell on the star studded lineup that earned the group its “super” status, and Tinted Windows is no exception. The power pop quartet has been riding high upon the heels of their self-titled freshman debut, but on the surface, the group’s lineup makes for a much better story than the album.
