Cover Wars: “Trey Week” Edition

If you’re familiar with Cover Wars, a Tuesday staple here at Hidden Track, you know we take a song covered by at least a few artists, embed audio and video of different artists covering the song – and have our readers vote on the best version. Since it’s Trey Week, we are putting a different spin on it. For this edition of Cover Wars, we have a compiled a collection of ten different TAB covers. Since there have been so many different lineups of this band, we have kept it to just covers that have been played by the rhythm section of Tony Markellis & Russ Lawton and the horns.

And since we’re mixing things up so much, we’re going to allow you to select the three that are your favorites, and not just one.

The Covers:

C’mon Baby Let’s Go Downtown (Crazy Horse) Last Played: 10/23/2008

This Crazy Horse cover was debuted on the Trey ’99 tour and one of the few covers to get plays by both Phish and Trey’s solo bands. Missing in action for over six years, it reappeared on Classic TAB tour to open the 10/21/2008 show in Providence, RI.

Cover Wars: It Makes No Difference

Written by guitarist Robbie Robertson and sung by bassist Rick Danko, It Makes No Difference was first released in 1975 on Northern Lights-Southern Cross, the first real studio record from The Band in four years. An incredible tale of heartbreak, the track clocks in over six and a half minutes, one of the longest in The Band’s catalog (Acadian Driftwood, also on Northern Lights-Southern Cross is almost seven minutes long).

Big Red Goes Green For New Songs

Trey Anastasio unveiled two new songs, Burn That Bridge and Sailboat Man, with his Classic TAB ensemble at last weekend’s Hangout Festival. Sailboat Man was written by Anastasio with longtime writing partner Tom Marshall especially for the event, while Burn That Bridge marks the debut of Trey’s songwriting partnership with songwriter/performer Amanda Green.

Green cut her teeth on the cabaret circuit before moving to Nashville to write and perform country music. The daughter of a Broadway actress (Phyllis Newman) and a famed Broadway lyricist/playwright (Adolph Green), Amanda embraced her theatrical roots writing the lyrics for the musical stage adaptation of High Fidelity in 2006 and multiple other musicals. In 2003, Green put out a CD called Put a Little Love in Your Mouth that garnered praise from the likes of Stephen Sondheim who sent her a fan letter.

Now, Amanda Green enters a completely different dimension of the music industry as the latest songwriting partner for fellow Manhattan resident Trey Anastasio. The pair have penned a few more songs that Anastasio plans to debut this summer with his other band, Phish. You can also expect to hear a number of new Anastasio/Marshall tunes on Phish Summer Tour.
