Artist & Title: Chris Barron – How Could You Want Him When You Know You Could Have Me
Date & Venue: 2009-11-12 The Mint, Los Angeles CA
Taper & Show Download: David Landsberger

It’s not very often I’ll repeat the same song on Last Week’s Sauce, but as I was doing my normal cruising around my download sites – I saw this solo acoustic show from the Spin Doctors’ Chris Barron. And I saw that he must have given a very lengthy introduction to the Spin Doctors tune I featured in September in this feature. Not only is the story mildly interesting, but the arrangement Barron plays is quite different than the one you are used to hearing. Barron next plays at Davinci’s Pub in Collegville, PA on December 4th with his band The Time Bandits.

Cover Wars: Lenny Edition

Lenny is the tenth and final track on Stevie Ray Vaughan’s 1983 debut album Texas Flood. The song’s title is a tribute to SRV’s wife Lenora Bailey.

Cover Wars

Jeff Kitts sums up this tune very well in the book Guitar World Presents Stevie Ray Vaughan,

Like any master musician, Vaughan was just as comfortable with slow, delicate ballads as he was with barn burners. Vaughan composed the beautiful ballad, “Lenny,” for his first wife, and recorded it on Texas Flood. “Lenny” is very Hendrix influenced; it’s sort of a cross between “Little Wing” and “Angel,” two of Hendrix’s greatest ballads.

This week I wanted to add a theme to the selections as I did when we did an All-Bonnaroo edition. Last week ScottyB ran a great list of touring jambands that didn’t make it out of the 2000’s. The five groups featured in this piece are jambands that are indeed going to make it as touring bands carrying their respective ensembles into 2010 and hopefully well beyond.

Artist & Title: Blues Traveler – But Anyway
Date & Venue: 2009-10-06 The Paradise, Boston MA
Taper & Show Download: Dave Mallick

If longevity is the name of the game this week, Blues Traveler is a good band to lead off having formed in 1987 and put out their first album in 1990. Sure, they might not be playing arenas anymore (The Paradise in Boston is a room all of the other bands in this feature have outgrown), but they’re still out there gigging. Blues Traveler plays tonight at The Fillmore in Charlotte, NC.

Artist & Title: the Disco Biscuits – Donde?
Date & Venue: 2009-09-12 Starland Ballroom, Sayreville NJ
Taper & Show Download: Jesse Hurlburt

the Disco Biscuits didn’t hit their goal of releasing their next studio album before Chinese Democracy, but Planet Anthem IS slated for a January 2010 release. The Biscuits also have announced they will be issuing three EP’s leading up to January, the first of which is due this month. There is no tracklist available, so I can’t tell you if Donde? is on the album, but it was debuted at this September 12th show. tDB have just started an extended fall tour, they’ve got today off and play tomorrow in Fayetteville, AR.

Highlights: moe. down Turns 10 in Turin

John Coleman spent Labor Day Weekend at moe. down & filed this report…

Warm days and cool nights illuminated by a harvest moon meant plenty of good vibes floating around moe. down 10 at Snow Ridge Ski Resort, in Turin, N.Y. The rustic locale is located just outside the southwestern boundary of the Adirondack Park, rising up among sleepy towns and farms.

p1010860

Similar to the Mountain Jam stage setup at Hunter Mountain in the Catskills, the main stage faces up a ski slope that provides a great perch for those who chose to challenge its increasingly steep pitch while second stage is located on a flat area near the main lodge, among vendor booths and picnic tables.

Although much was made of the lack of star power when sized up to previous moe. downs, with a mix of veteran acts like Sam Bush, Ani Difranco, Ominous Seapods, Lynch and Cake, and emerging bands like The New Mastersounds, The Heavy Pets and The Nate Wilson group, who could complain? The late addition of Umphrey’s McGee was enough to get those sitting on the fence to spring for the affordable weekend pass.

There were many moe. down highlights, too many to list. But here’s a taste…

1. Bushwhacked!: To cap off moe.’s first set of Day 2, the “Godfather of new-grass,” Sam Bush, joined moe. on fiddle during the instrumental, Meat. The crowd loved it and evidently the band did too, as the sit-in clocked in at just under 24 minutes. Bush also sat in on Mexico earlier in the day.
