16 Years Ago Today – Roots Legend Doug Sahm Dies at 58 (Watch “Mendocino” Live ’75)

16 years ago today (11/18/99) Doug Sahm, the rock guitarist known as “Sir Doug,” died at 58.  Although he only had one big hit, “She’s About A Mover” in 1965, he followed it with a long recording career, appearing on Grateful Dead’s Wake of the Flood and Willie Nelson’s The Troublemaker, while bringing such stars as Bob Dylan and Dr. John to his own recording sessions. In 1989, Sahm formed the Tex-Mex supergroup, the Texas Tornados, with Freddy Fender, Augie Meyers, and Flaco Jimenez.[1] The original group recorded seven albums (including two live ones, and a “Best of” collection). Their first album won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Performance for the song “Soy de San Luis”, in 1991. Watch Sahm perform his golden great “Mendocino” live in Austin from 1975.
