30 Years Ago Today – Metallica’s Video For “One” Makes Its Terrifying Debut

30 years ago today (1/22/89), Metallica’s first ever music video, for the …And Justice Fall All track “One,” makes its debut.  Shot in black and white by director Michael Salomon, the video’s story is intercut with scenes taken from the 1971 anti-war film Johnny Got His Gun. The harrowing videos shows images of Joe Bonham (Bottoms), a young American soldier hit by an artillery shell during World War I, lies in a hospital bed. He is a quadruple amputee who has also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. This or course runs parallel to “One’s” loudly chanted lyrics of “Landmine has taken my sight/Taken my speech/Taken my hearing/Taken my arms/Taken my legs/Taken my soul/Left me with life in hell.” Check out the video below…
