30 Years Ago Today – Andy Warhol, Pop Art Founder & Early Velvet Underground Manager Dies (Watch Velvet Underground & Nico Live ’66)

30 years ago today (2/22/87), Andy Warhol, pop artist and producer died after a gall bladder operation at age 58. The founder of the Pop Art movement, produced and managed the Velvet Underground, designed the 1967 Velvet Underground And Nico ‘peeled banana’ album cover and The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album cover. Check out this clip of Warhol directing The Velvet Under and Nico in 1966 as part of his Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, which gained attention for its experimental performance sensibilities and controversial lyrical topics, including drug abuse, prostitution, sadism and masochism and sexual deviancy.
