30 years ago today (5/28/91), Smashing Pumpkins released their game-changing debut LP Gish. A no-filler ten-song punching bag of early 90’s proto alt-rock with shades of glam and grunge, the Billy Corgan-led band never sounded more possessed and poignant. Bigger commercial success would follow Smashing Pumpkins with Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, alongside plenty of inner-band drama, yet Gish remains the band’s most unspoiled piece or work.
