33 Years Ago Today- Herbie Hancock Wins Big AT First Ever MTV Video Music Awards (Watch “Rockit” Live)

33 years ago today (9/14/84) the first MTV Awards ceremonies are held at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, co-hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler. And yes you read that right Herbie Hancock was the big winner taking home five awards for “Rockit”, followed by Michael Jackson, who won three. The night’s main award, though, went to The Cars for “You Might Think,” making this the first of a very small number of times in which the winner of Video of the Year did not take home any other awards that night.
