38 years ago today (9/27/80), Kurtis Blow becomes the first rapper to appear on Soul Train when he performs “The Breaks” on the show. Host Don Cornelius is flummoxed. “It doesn’t make sense to old guys like me,” he tells Kurtis in the interview segment. Of course in years to follow Soul Train would pack in many hip-hop artists as that art-form continues to blossom in the mid to late 80’s. Watch the performance below…
