40 years ago today (9/16/77), Talking Heads released their debut LP Talking Heads: 77. More art rock and new wave than punk, Talking Heads emerged from the CBGBs scene and established themselves as one of the more rhythmically driven rock bands of their time, aided by the novel vocals of David Byrne. The band would continue to flesh out their sound even expanding into a world funk orchestra on later albums, but for now, 77 stands as one of rock’s finest debut LPs. Watch the band perform “Don’t Worry About The Government” live in 1978.
