48 years ago today (9/29/67) Mickey Hart joined the Grateful Dead as a second drummer to Bill Kruetzmanm. in February 1971 when he extricated himself from the band due to conflict between band management and his father. He returned to the Dead in 1974 and remained with the group until their official dissolution in 1995 and has since played in numerous Dead related band including this summer’s Fare Thee Well shows and the upcoming Dead & Co. performances. Most importantly, Hart is a true ambassador of percussion instruments and a musicologist who has authored books and contributed immensely to the nuances of sound and rhythm.
