50 years ago today (3/5/71), Led Zeppelin performed “Stairway to Heaven” in concert for the first time at the Ulster Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It’s the first date in their Back to the Clubs Tour and the beginning of a rather symbolic relationship with that one particular song for the band. Although the song is often regarded as the most popular rock song of all time, many have a love-hate relationship with it, although Jimmy Page certainly does rip one of rock’s most monumental solos inside the eight-minute song.
