60 years ago today (6/8/61), Marvin Gaye released his debut LP The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye which also served as the second long-playing album released by the Motown label. As Gaye was still searching for his permanent sound at this point, the smooth singer agreed with Berry Gordy to record an album of jazz standards with a compromise that he’d record a couple of songs with an R&B swing.
