Happy 61st Birthday Eddie Van Halen (Watch “Unchained” Live ’81)

61 years ago today (1/26/55),  Edward Lodewijk van Halen was born in the Netherlands. Van Halen has often been considered the greatest guitarist by many and was a bona fide rock star during the 80’s with many Van Halen videos in regular rotation on MTV. His use of two-handed tapping, natural and artificial harmonics, vibrato, and tremolo picking, combined with his rhythmic sensibility and melodic approach, have influenced an entire generation of guitarists.  In honor of Eddie’s birthday lets check out one of Van Halen’s most rocking songs- “Unchained” live from 1981 in Oakland.

  2. Their first album is in my top 5 debut albums of all time. Happy bday Eddie. I saw them on their first tour stop on their first tour with black sabbath in Tulsa in 1979. Keep rockin’ Eddie.

  3. I love this clip. The best part is the screw up at the beginning before the first verse but they made it seem like they meant to do it.
