The Preatures – “Somebody’s Talking” (Song Review)

[rating=8.00]

Sydney, Australia’s The Preatures are yet another distinct and innovative group furthering the ’80s-inspired musical moment we seem to be living and listening through. For those fans anxiously awaiting an equally colorful follow-up to their hit single “Is This How You Feel,” this first taste from the band’s upcoming debut album, Blue Planet Eyes, won’t disappoint. “Somebody’s Talking” is a deliciously catchy, foot-tapping tune full of sass and momentum. Isabella Manfredi’s seductive vocals (reminiscent of the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde) are ripe with complexity and intrigue, mingling with a hard-driving rhythm and high-energy guitar riffs.

In an interview with Aussie music outlet Triple J, The Preatures explained the track’s purposeful similarity with “Is This How You Feel.”

“We felt like ‘Is This How You Feel’ needed a friend,” Manfredi explained. “Every song on the record has a partner, and this is the first real song on the record that gives you a real sense of what it is.”

The singer also discussed the track’s lyrical themes, which focus on homesickness: “It’s representative of the year that we’ve had,” she said. “I wanted something that I could travel to, and I got really set on this song idea of Jack’s and I started thinking about how much I missed Sydney and missed home and that brutal blinding sky that makes you want to sear your eyeball off. I love that about Australia. I love the Australian landscape. And [amongst all of that] it’s also a really simple pop track: it’s not my innards spewed out for the masses.”

Though “Somebody’s Talking” bears similarities to past work, it builds on the fun factor and nostalgia The Preatures have established. Blue Planet Eyes drops on September 30th, but in the meantime, this propulsive pop gem is sure to keep fans glued to the rewind button.
