David Byrne has been known to reinvent himself through various artistic mediums, so it was no surprise that he recently decided to recharge his creative battery by reconvening with Brian Eno. Byrne/Eno of course are renowned for their work on early Talking Heads albums and 1981’s landmark electronica/ambient album – My Life in The Bush of Ghosts.
Everything That Happens That Will Happen Today is the electronic-gospel coming of age project for the pair. While there are experimental sounds present in “I Feel My Stuff” “Wanted For Life” and “Poor Boy,” there are numerous slow gospel numbers composed around Byrne’s soaring voice. Openers “Home” and “The Big Nurse” give Everything a warm opening that is more gospel than “Bryne /Eno” and provide a homey reflection. Gospel and rock are sewn in “Strange Overtones” and “One Fine Day,” while the former that could been a Talking Heads classic with its danceable beat and undeniable chorus.
For every aw-shucks happy go lucky number (“Life Is Long”), there is a moment of seriousness, as in the sleepy closer “”The Lighthouse.” With only two true electronic numbers, Everything That Happens isn’t what you’d immediately expect from Byrne/Eno, but this aint no disco and this aint no fooling around.
