#SorryNotSorry was the new trending topic on the interwebs today after Orange is the New Black dropped its trailer for upcoming season 3, slated out June 12th. While the trailer was less than telling about what’s in store for us at Litchfield this year, we did get a look at our returning favorites, and a few exciting new comers.
Right off the bat, we get a quick view of Lori Petty joining the cast. Last season she made a quick cameo appearance with Piper on the plane with the male inmates. It’s exciting because she’s a well-established actress who can definitely bring in a new tone as far as the dramatic acting goes. Additionally it looks like Alex is back at the prison, and from the looks of her black eye she has a story to tell once she’s re-assimilated. With no signs of Larry, and the ever interesting and gorgeous Ruby Rose joining the cast, I’d say it isn’t crazy to assume a new complicated storyline for Piper.
Red is back and looking well rested after her brush with death last season, and Dayanara and John look like they’re back to their cozy forbidden romance. Dayanara’s baby should be due soon, so one can only hope they’ll give us a “John is a new (and hopefully responsible) daddy,” storyline. Sophia continues to reign supreme in all her fabulous glory. Her and Moreno appear beside Big Boo as they reveal a new look for her. Boo never gets enough love in the series, and maybe this new look is to court a new prison princess? Both Sophia and Moreno are shown in dramatic situations; Moreno starring wistfully out the window in tears, and Sophia at odds with Gloria. Looks like Sophia won’t be eating in the cafeteria for a while.
A quick flash of Nicky out of prison could be an extended back story on the crafty, curly haired player, but after the shot of Moreno (and Moreno’s big blow up with Christopher last season) it looks like she might have finished serving her time. Not much sign of Poussey in the preview, but Taystee’s repeated clips hint a tell-tale reconciliation within the group after the Vee situation. Suzanne (or Crazy Eyes) closed it out with her defending her writing. Though the new CO deems it pornography, she affirms that it is simply a love story between two people, and a bunch of aliens. Oh Suzanne, you’re too adorable.
Considering that Piper’s sentence was originally only a year long, we really couldn’t have missed much during the break. The turnover in the prison happens quickly enough that we could have a new batch of characters every few months, or every season. The show is good, but one of the best parts is the LGBT aspect behind it bringing different sorts of relationships and advocates to the screen that wouldn’t have been seen otherwise. This season looks promising in terms of past continuity and a growth in characters, acting, and overall writing. Count us in.
