Friday Mix Tape: On The Road

As much of the HT staff takes to the road this weekend for some of Phish’s Northeast run, thought we’d dedicate this week’s Mix Tape to the art of the road trip. We’ve got six tunes dedicated to getting out and hitting the open road and exploring this great country, so we hope these inspire you to jump in the car, roll the windows down and take a road trip of your own…

We kick things off with Ben Gibbard & Jay Farrar with California Zephyr from their fantastic soundtrack for the documentary One Fast Move Or I’m Gone which chronicles Jack Kerouac’s life during the writing of his Big Sur novel. From there, is The Band with Endless Highway which was featured as a bonus track on the reissue of their fourth LP – Cahoots. Then, we’ve got Simon & Garfunkel with their all-time classic road trip song America from Bookends.

Next up, we’ve got Woody Guthrie’s ode to crisscrossing the country with his iconic signature song This Land Is Your Land from The Asch Recordings Box Set. Finally, we close things out with two songs about the trials and travails of being a touring musician on the road. First up, is Willie Nelson with Me & Paul which offers up some of the lessons he’s learned from gigging around the country from the Red Headed Stranger’s Yesterday’s Wine, and then we’ve got the good ‘ol Grateful Dead with Truckin’ from their classic live double-album Europe 72.
