‘Batman v. Superman’ New Trailer Looks Absolutely Nuts

There’s really only the one thing you can say about the latest trailer for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which made its debut last night on Jimmy Kimmel, and that’s that it’s totally and completely batshit fucking bananas, but in the best possible way. I don’t even know where to begin. From start to finish, the new trailer is nothing but the most insane and ridiculous nonsense I have ever seen, and I hope to whatever god is listening that this speaks to the entire movie. If it does, we’re in for a treat the likes of which we probably don’t deserve.

The tension starts early as Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck who, fuck everybody, is going to rock this role to no end) arrives at a party thrown by Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg, who’s apparently gone full psycho for this performance, to the benefit of us all) which is being covered by Clark Kent (Henry Cavill, reprising his role from Man of Steel, which was actually better than the internet hive-mind would have you believe). Clark Kent attempts to interview Bruce Wayne about Batman and Affleck gives the slightest of smiles which, to my mind, suggests that Bruce Wayne knows that Clark Kent knows that Batman knows that Superman knows.

All of this knowing goes even deeper when Lex Luthor shows ups, insanely wowed by the joining of minds he has set up, seemingly implying that he, in his psychotic brilliance also knows everything they know, and coyly suggesting Bruce Wayne should never pick a fight with Clark Kent.

If I wasn’t already in (which, full disclosure, I was) I would have been in at this moment. This exchange fully encapsulates the Batman and Superman dynamic and, from the appearance of the trailer, it handles it beautifully. But then things keep getting more and more insane.

Batman and Superman exchanging blows while Luthor monologues about his plans and his brilliance, Batplanes swooping down from the sky, Superman ordering Batman to stand down, Luthor doing something to the body of General Zod (Michael Shannon) which, supposedly, leads to the creation of Doomsday, who famously killed Superman back in the 90’s in the “Death of Superman” arc.

You’d think we’d have reached peak crazy by now, BUT NO! With Superman and Batman’s attention taken off of each other for a moment, Doomsday projects some sort of explosive charge at the heroes, prompting a truncated, “Oh shit” from Batman, before something blocks the charge (to the tune of leveling a city block) and when the smoke clears we see a beshielded warrior princess who inspires wonder in both Supes and Bats.

“Is she with you?” Superman asks.

“I thought she was with you,” Batman growls.

And suddenly for the first time ever in a live action setting, we see the holy trinity of DC heroes—Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot, who looks amazing as the heroine)—standing together, facing a foe, and fighting as a team. Justice has dawned.

Is this movie going to be any good? No idea. It’s certainly packed with heroes and villains and it looks like approximately everything in the world is going on. That might be difficult to pack into a single movie, I’ll grant you that. However, it also looks like director Zack Snyder has just decided to amp the insanity up to 11 and has committed fully to that premise.  From all appearances this is going to be the craziest movie of 2016, and if they pull it off, it just might be the best comic book movie in recent memory.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opens everywhere on March 25, 2016.

  1. My only concern here is based on previous experience with too many DC based movies–the Bale/Nolan Batmans aside– that is, the producers/directors/writers attempt to do too much and here the Batman/Superman conflict isn’t enough: they must launch the JLA as well, hence the appearance of WW (and it would seem Aquaman as well) underscoring the movie’s subtitle: “Dawn of Justice”….League

  2. and it’s worth saying in this context, vis a vis your observation on “Man of Steel,” that movie was a splendid reconfiguration of the character and its lore precisely because the moviemakers didn’t try to do too much
