Film Bits: No ‘The Dark Tower’ Trailer Yet, But the Poster is Cool

First Poster for ‘The Dark Tower’ Revealed

Though we’re a mere four months away from the release of the long anticipated The Dark Tower, the remix/sequel to Stephen King’s epic fantasy series, we’ve still yet to see a trailer. That’s a risky bet, considering the route they’ve taken to bring the story to life, and highly unusual for a summer blockbuster. While we’re still waiting anxiously for the footage, King himself did unveil the first poster for the Idris Elba/Matthew McConaughey vehicle on Twitter, and it’s a doozy. Fans of the books will no doubt be delighted by the evocative imagery of the poster, which uses the upside down silhouette of New York City to form the outline of the titular Dark Tower as well as showcases the basic themes of the story in a succinct, appreciable way. Still, the lack of a trailer at this point is slightly concerning. The film was already pushed back from a first quarter release in order to finish the visual effects of the film, and you’d think that, by this point, they’d have something to show for it. Perhaps the poster release signifies something is on the horizon. Either way, they seem dead set on the July 28 release, so we’ll known soon enough.

Robert Downey Jr. to Star as Doctor Dolittle

Doctor Dolittle is headed back to the big screen. After an intense bidding war over the rights to The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, Universal Pictures will be producing the film with Robert Downey Jr. set to star as the iconic veterinarian. The film is set to be written and directed by Stephen Gaghan, who previously won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for penning Traffic. This will mark the first time the eccentric doctor has graced movie theaters since Eddie Murphy’s Doctor Dolittle 2 in 2001. Murphy played an updated version of the character in two separate movies, ushering the character into a new generation. No word yet on how they’re planning on presenting the character this time, but it would make sense for them to get back to Doolittle’s Victorian roots.

Chris Evans to Head Up ‘Red Sea Diving Resort’ in Post-‘Avengers’ Role

Chris Evans has found his next role in Gideon Raff’s Red Sea Diving Resort. Raff, who created the Israeli series Prisoners of War (later adapted as Homeland here in the States) wrote the screenplay and will direct Evans as an Israeli secret agent who leads a team to help rescue Ethiopian Jews to Israel. This type of story is certainly within Raff’s wheelhouse, and Evans, given his experience as Captain America—which, in recent movies, has basically been a comic book riff on the superspy motif—won’t be stretching too far out of his own wheelhouse. Evans is currently in the middle of filming for back to back Avengers movies, so as of yet there’s no timeline for the release of Red Sea Diving Resort.

Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron Co-Star in ‘Flarsky’

Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron have been tapped as co-stars in the Jonathan Levine directed Flarsky. Based on a script by Dan Sterling, which has made the rounds via the Black List, a popular catalogue of Hollywood’s best unproduced scripts, Rogen will play an out of work journalist who decides to find his former childhood crush, his babysitter, who is now one of the most powerful women in business (played by Theron). That’s arguably the role the Rogen is best at playing, though Theron’s involvement does bring some weight to the project. Levine has previously worked with Rogen on The Night BeforeI while Sterline wrote the controversial Rogen film, The Interview.
