‘Silicon Valley’ Creates an Odd Couple (TV REVIEW)

[rating=7.00] “Intellectual Property”

Well, it’s finally happened. Gavin and Richard are about to team up in what will undoubtedly be the oddest coupling known to man. With Gavin having been kicked out of his position as CEO of Hooli, and Richard having given up being CEO of Piperchat, they’re in the same boat. This is a change we can get behind; Gavin literally can’t afford for the two of them to fail.

Richard’s discovery of Peter Gregory’s notebooks is huge, though given his track record it’s hard to tell whether this is going anywhere. Realistically Gavin is never going to sign over the rights of the “new internet” to Richard, but he’ll have the opportunity to redeem himself by riding on the coattails of success. As much as we want to root for the two, it almost seems too easy?

Erlich’s Spotify for food is brilliant, though Jian Yang is sure to help it implode. If Erlich can make back some of the money he lost on the Pied Piper deal, he’ll be able to up his shenanigans ante. Erlich is nothing without his shenanigans, and his character has hit a stagnant point. Yes, he’s the purveyor of the incubator but aside from effectively stealing Big Head’s money, what else has he done aside from crack jokes and smoke an obscene amount of weed?

Big Head on the other hand is flourishing. Just as hoped, he’s been pushed back into fame through his previous ventures. He’s now a guest lecturer at Stanford. What does he talk about? Who knows, but considering he’s got impeccable luck, it’s only a matter of time before he’s the Dean of a college. The thing about Big Head is as clueless as he is, he’s still smart as hell. It’s only a matter of time before he accidentally invents space travel or something.

Dinesh’s bonding with his new lady love over their hatred of Gilfoyle is precious, though precarious. His track record with women isn’t great, and with the loss of Piperchat, his self-esteem is in the gutter. As much as they hate to admit it, the two are probably the only real friends they have.

The best moment this week came with Laurie’s surprise pregnancy. Monica’s reaction embodied the whole moment perfectly; surprise, wonder, and then quickly getting over it without any more fuss because she has bigger things to worry about. With the continued lack of a full female presence on the show, Laurie being casually pregnant is perfect. It’s a thing that happens, whatever.

Monica getting screwed over attests to the boys club, but it’s putting her in a new position where she can claw her way back to the top. If she figures out a way to get Erlich’s app up and running, she’ll not only be making miracles happen, but she’ll have proven she deserves more than the credit she’s getting. She’s been the only constant in the dudes lives throughout this whole process; she deserves that next step.

With Peter Gregory effectively back at the helm, there’s a chance these new changes will actually stick. There are constants that they’ll never be able to control, but for the most part there’s no reason not to be optimistic. Well, aside from the fact that it’s always blown up in the past. And they’re all mega fuck ups, and their own worst enemies. On second thought, maybe it will just be nice to enjoy this winning streak they seem to be hitting.
