‘Heart Beats Loud’ Snags A Summer Release Date

After a sold out screening at SXSW this year, the third feature film from director Brett Haley, Heart Beats Loud, will be coming to theaters this summer. Global independent studio Gunpowder & Sky will be distributing the film, which will have a limited theatrical release on June 8th. More release dates will be added later.

The film stars Nick Offerman as Frank Fisher, a single father and “purveyor of pressed vinyl” who from a band with his daughter, Sam (Kiersey Clemons), the summer before she heads cross-country to attend UCLA. It’s the second of Haley’s films Offerman has appeared in, who had a bit part in last year’s The Hero, which starred Sam Elliot as a former movie star facing his inevitable mortality.

Offerman takes center stage in Heart Beats Loud, which Haley wrote with the actor in mind, and gives the veteran character actor a chance to show his range as a performer. Clemons, who also boasts a lengthy resume despite her young age, is equally captivating as Sam, who’s equally compelling a singer as she is an actor. It also features Ted Danson, Blythe Danner, and Toni Collette.

The film has the same smart, sentimental slice-of-life quality that The Big Sick did, which played at SXSW last year. After an equally positive response (and sold out screening), it also got a limited summer release date in 2017, and thanks to word-of-mouth, became something of a sleeper hit — and was eventually nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

Here’s hoping Heart Beats Loud gets a similar reaction this summer. In the meantime, you can read our review here.
