ALBUM PREMIERE: Corinne Sharlet Makes Strong Solo Debut with Western Americana EP ‘Deceiver’

With a voice that radiates ethereal mystery while staying grounded in guttural richness, Corinne Sharlet is singing her way into a bold new sonic world. Deceiver, Corinne’s debut solo EP due out February 7th, dives brazenly into a dark, warm ambience, transporting listeners to an expansive scenery where the narrator is as relatable as she is otherworldly. Armed with a captivating musicality, Corinne is quickly emerging as a songwriting tour de force.

“This collection of songs has been a long time coming,” shares Corinne, whose performance and musical experience took root in Central Oregon’s wild high desert when she was a kid. Over the years Corinne’s contribution to various bands as a dynamic vocalist shaped her prowess as a dedicated performer, but it is her own inquisitive poeticism and bone-deep melodic instinct that shape the earthy musical aesthetic for her newly formal solo career. With a catalogue of well-crafted songs in her back pocket, Corinne is busy performing throughout the West Coast and dreaming up plans to record her debut album.

Today Glide is excited to offer an exclusive premiere of Deceiver ahead of its release this coming Friday. The four-song collection is a powerful debut for Corrine, who previously played as a member of Sharlet Crooks. Opening track “Firing Line” has a Spaghetti Western-inspired sound that is blended with dreamy guitar and piano to back up Corrine’s driving vocals. The album’s title track dives deeper into the Western sound while also working in a trotting beat that weaves in and out with the vocals. Exotic and mysterious guitar accentuates Corrine’s stretched out notes. “Evil Eye” slows the tempo for an eerie gothic folk sound, with Corrine offering a nostalgic nod to the reverberating sound of Nancy Sinatra. The EP closes its slowest tune, “Hail Mary”, a dark, stripped down folk tune that builds slowly and subtly all while letting Corrine’s vocals stay front and center. Deceiver was recorded at Saint. Cecilia Studios in Portland, and engineered, co-produced and mixed by Steven Lee Tracy. Though it is only four songs, Deceiver is an impactful debut for an artist that is on to big things.

Corinne shares her own perspective on the EP:

“This EP is a collection of songs that I wrote as I was wrestling with what it meant to me to be a musician. It took me a long time to be able to identify as an artist because I wasn’t sure how I wanted music to play a role in my life. In order for me to take my music seriously and move forward with recording an EP, I had to first realize and accept that I will be singing and writing songs the rest of my life even when there is no one listening. For a while I had stopped making music and I got depressed. It wasn’t until I started singing again that I learned I need to sing and write songs. Whether I like it or not, songs are in my bones and they need to come out. The title track, Deceiver, is a call to my own creativity; calling on the courage to capture melodies when they come to me even if they sound weird or unfamiliar.”
