LISTEN: Memphis Soul Queen Elizabeth King Keeps It Vivacious Via “What You Gonna Do”

Memphis soul gospel queen Elizabeth King recorded her first single in 1970, and if all had gone as planned, she would have made her first album a few years later. Instead, it took another half-century, but Living In The Last Days, the latest sacred soul long-player from Memphis’s Bible and Tire imprint, captures King at the height of her powers, with the intervening decades only serving to stoke the flames of one of the most memorable voices in modern gospel music.

The sound of Stax is alive and well on “What You Gonna Do,” the latest single from Elizabeth King. The groove is classic yet infectious, driven by the fuzz of a fat bass groove and swamp-laden guitars. Heating up the track for Mrs. King’s commanding pipes as they grapple the listener into submission. At 77, King shows no sign of slowing down and “What You Gonna Do” is only further evidence that Elizabeth King is rising.

Band of Horses founding member and video co-creator Ben Reynolds said, “It was an overcast day, perfect mood for the video. We set up a green screen in Elizabeth’s front yard and jammed the tune as loud as we could. Mrs. King is so authentic and it was an honor to work with her. We wanted to contrast her authenticity with social media app effects and apocalyptic footage. Thank you for trusting us, Mrs. King!”
