CAUSTIC COMMENTARY: Squid, Andy Shauf, Yo La Tengo, Quasi, Drain & More

Due to every major blog and news outlet continually reeling from this past weekend’s Grammy Awards, some new music might have gotten buried under all the red carpet pictures and think pieces on the winners. During a week like this, it’s easy for album announcements and the release of singles to slip under the radar as our timelines become all consumed with the winners and losers from Grammy night. Meanwhile, a whole crop of potential Grammy winners are looking to the future, gearing up new albums, and getting ready to release their new art into the world. 

If you feel out of the loop, don’t worry. Glide has hand-picked some of our favorite releases from the week so your playlist won’t get out-of-date too quickly. Check out our picks for the best new releases from the past week below: 

Andy Shauf – Norm

Norm 

Back with his first studio LP in two years, Andy Shauf is sounding better than ever. His new album Norm hits the shelves this week and is boasting with excellent songwriting and somber arrangements. The title track from the LP features a haunting piano melody that matches perfectly with the somber tone of the track. 

Yo La Tengo – Brain Capers

This Stupid World

The ever-prolific and endlessly innovative trio of Yo La Tengo is back with a brand new album. This Stupid World arrives today and is exactly what any Yo La Tengo fan could want, and more. “Brain Capers” is a highlight of the album, its delightfully weird textures are smoothed over by ripping guitar rhythms. 

Quasi – “Riots & Jokes

Breaking The Balls of History  

For the first time in a very long time, the duo Quasi has released a new album. The combination of keyboardist Sam Coomes and former Sleater Kinny drummer Janet Weiss creates frantic rock music that center around walls of harmonies. “Riots & Jokes” is a highlight from their new LP and is one of the best arrangements on the album. 

Drain – “Evil Finds Light

LIVING PROOF

Hardcore punk band Drain is gearing up to release their sophomore LP and with the announcement comes a brand new single. The thrashing “Evil Finds Light” is coming off of their upcoming Living Proof album set to release May 5 via Epitaph Records. The new single has the band at full force as they tear through 2-minutes of hardcore punk. 

Samiam – “Crystallized”

Coming off of their first album since 2011, the historic punk group Samiam is making their big return. The band’s new album Stowaway is set to release on March 31 via Pure Noise Records. Their new single places them exactly where they left off, melodic chaos featuring some incredible songwriting. 

Fly Anakin – “Outsidigan’s Anthem

Coming off his upcoming LP set to release via Lex Records on April 5, Fly Anakin delivers another stellar single to get us ready for the full album. With longtime collaborator Foisey taking charge of the production on the full album, their chemistry shines on this new single, “Outsidigan’s Anthem”, as Anakin once again reinvents his flow horn samples and gut-punching drums. 

Indigo De Souza – “Younger & Dumber”

For her third album, Indigo De Souza seems to be getting ready to release her best work yet. The full album will be released on April 28 via Saddle Creek and if this brand new single is any sign as to what to expect, we’re in for something special. “Younger & Dumber” attempts to recreate that feeling of a youthful, directionless day spent wandering around. 

Squid – “Swing (In a Dream)

O Monolith 

Following up their crowd-favorite debut album from 2021, the eclectic band Squid releases their latest single along with the announcement of their new album. O Monolith will be released on June 9 via Warp Records. Their new single has the band toying with our idea of traditional song structure to create an onslaught of high-level musicianship that swells up beautifully. 

Lies – “Resurrection

Lies

It is about time the duo Lies came around to releasing a full LP, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The band’s debut album is set to release on March 31 via Polyvinyl and their new single will have anyone excited for the full album. “Resurrection” features the haunting vocals of the band overtop an unpredictable arrangement that is lush and challenging all at the same time. 

Smino – Smi, Myself & I 

Single

In the bio of his new single, the slick-talking Smino wrote “S.A.D 2, 4/20”. Essentially, his hinting at a follow-up to his S.A.D mixtape from 2020. Coming on the heels of his 2022 studio LP, Smino releases a freestyle over Beyoncé’s “Me, Myself, and I”. Don’t get caught up in his smooth delivery, Smino is one of the most-clever artists rapping today and his wordplay on this new freestyle is a shining example of how Smino has become a master of mixing his wit with his laid-back flows.
