Monday’s Hors D’Oeuvres & Weekend Setlists

We’ve got another answer to the Where’s Cactus query? Former Phish bassist Mike Gordon returned to the stage on Saturday night to sit in with Gov’t Mule at Burlington’s Memorial Auditorium. The artist formerly known as Cactus played a crazy looking bass during covers of the Grateful Dead’s Loser and JJ Cale’s After Midnight with Warren and the boys. You can buy the official audio recording of the show shortly over at Mule Tracks.

Ace provided us with plenty of coverage from the Austin City Limits festival this weekend, but a few other stories came our way…behold:

And as always on Mondays, read on after the jump for a full slate of setlists from the weekend in music…and hit us up with any cool links we didn’t see.

For A Good Time, Call Lebowski

From their moniker to their setlists to their personalities everything about Give Us The Money Lebowski comes in the name of having fun. These guys just want everyone (including themselves) to have a good time at their shows. Consider the mission accomplished: GUTML jammed for three hours on a batch of amazing covers and one audacious original during a late August Rocks Off cruise around the bottom of Manhattan.

Wanting to make sure they got to play as much music as possible, Lebowski started their rendition of the Velvet Underground’s Rock N Roll as soon as the boat pulled away from the pier at East 23rd. The boys jammed the hell out of the tune for nearly 20 minutes before they worked their way into Also Sprach Zarathustra. The song commonly referred to as 2001 started with guitarist Chris Cartelli adding a unique pattern to the familiar theme. Lead guitarist Nick Setteducato and bass player Mike Sojkowski quickly picked up what Cartelli was layin’ down, and they proceeded to accentuate the phrase nicely for the next 10 minutes. Now that’s fuckin’ teamwork!

The B List: Brothers In Arms

My sister just gave birth to her second son. One of the first things she said to me about having two sons was “now they can form a band.” Over the course of rock history there have been many pairs of brothers that have achieved major success. So this week’s B List looks at our 10 favorite pairs of brothers who jam together.

10. The Evans Brothers [Soulive]

The Evans brothers with band mate Eric Krasno

Neal [organ] and Alan [drums] Evans make up two thirds of the soulful trio known as Soulive. The Evans boys cut their teeth by playing with Moon Boot Lover in the mid ’90s before forming Soulive with Eric Krasno in 1999. Neal is an incredibly percussive musician who plays organ with one hand and a bass keyboard with the other. Alan is the king of inventive fills, always thinking of new ways to push the music. Soulive recently released No Place Like Soul on the revamped Stax label.

Grousing The Aisles: I Write The Songs

Have you ever sat down with an instrument and tried to write a song? Needless to say, that shit ain’t easy (much like pimpin’). This week’s edition of Grousing The Aisles looks at gigs from four of our favorite songwriters of all-time. We begin with a recent show from Stevie Wonder’s first tour since Bill Clinton was in office. Next we check out what Jeff Tweedy and the boys of Wilco did with their summer vacation. Then we go back to the heady days of the ’90s to pay tribute to the extremely underrated Matthew Sweet. Finally, we finish with a just released soundboard from the legendary Paul McCartney. Less set-up, more grousing…

Stevie Wonder 09/04/2007 DAUD [FLAC, MP3]

Stevie Wonder has returned to the road with a career-spanning show after an absence of nearly a decade. A buncha recordings from the tour have surfaced, but this bootleg from last week’s show in Saratoga, California sounds the best. Wonder gives the people what they want by sprinkling a generous portion of hits throughout the 130-minute set, including Higher Ground, Sir Duke and I Wish.

Little Stevie isn’t a guy that just comes out to play his greatest hits without addressing his audience. Wonder opened the show with an anecdote about why he decided to return to the road, and he proceeded to chat with the crowd throughout the concert. The stories are great, but the music is even better. My favorite part of this show is the relentless sequence of Signed Sealed Delivered (I’m Yours), Memphis and Boogie On Reggae Woman. Wonder’s 11-piece band is so tight that it sounds like they’ve been on the road together for years. Hopefully Stevie enjoyed his brief return to the road and will book a full tour for 2008 so that we can all have a chance to see him own the stage.

Ryan Montbleau Band: Ready for the Big Time

The Ryan Montbleau Band has spent the last few weeks in the recording studio where it was in control of all the variables. But when the band returned to the stage on the last day of August for a gig on Rocks Off’s Half Moon cruise ship, it didn’t control a thing, including the setlist.

The band eschewed the use of a planned setlist on this night, choosing instead to embrace the moment and fly by the seat of their pants. Great bands know how to please the audience under any conditions, and the Ryan Montbleau Band showed what they are made of by putting on one helluva show.

Monday’s Hors d’Oeuvres & Weekend Setlists

Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth have officially shared a stage for the first time in 22 years. Van Halen, which kicks off a reunion tour on September 27th, performed at a rehearsal in L.A. and the details have leaked. A friend of a crew member posted spoilers on a popular VH message board about the stage setup and setlist — said friend also posted some photos from the rehearsal, just in case anyone declared shenanigans on his tale. We’re not gonna spill the details, but the setlist looks awesome. Now, let’s see what else is goin’ on today…

And as always on Mondays, read on after the jump for a full slate of setlists from the weekend, including all the acts from Farm Aid, Bonerama, Genesis, Gov’t Mule, Rilo Kiley, Smashing Pumpkins, Tea Leaf Green and many more…
