Gogol Bordello: Higher Ground, Burlington, VT 6/6/09

Burlington, Vermont loves Gogol Bordello. Front-man Eugene Hutz has a long time affiliation with “B-Town” since finding himself in the Queen City as the final destination of a refugee relocation program back in 1991 and the city helped him nurture his already extreme musical ambitions. He repays that kindness in full every time he brings Gogol Bordello to town, this time being no exception.

The Dexateens: Pianos’s, New York, NY 5/15/09

These Tuscaloosa, Alabama boys made their first stop in NYC a memorable one at Piano’s on the Lower East Side.  Equipped with trucker hats, pompadours, and sideburns that could cut a steak, this 5-piece blasted out the doors and invigorated a small but eager crowd.  They powered through their set with a three guitar attack and rock solid low-end that dripped hellfire an Jack Daniels.

Phish – Fenway Park, Boston MA 5.31.09

Phish summoned their collective Roy Hobbs, knocked the cover off the ball, and annihilated the spun-like-the-twine-on-the-inside-of-a-baseball crowd (lame baseball analogy #1)

A recent show by Seattle-based, Barsuk artist Say Hi (…), revealed a generally promising young act that could use a bit more fleshing out. A one-person recording artist (Eric Elbogen), Say Hi’s recent show featured Elbogen and a drummer, opening for Minnesota’s amazing Cloud Cult.

The Gaslight Anthem: Recher Theatre, Towson, MD 5/7/09

The Gaslight Anthem released one of 2008's best records, were a highlight of last summer's Vans Warped Tour, released a fantastic 10" on Record Store Day and are now on the verge of opening for perhaps their biggest influence, Bruce Springsteen. There really couldn't be much more of a positive vibe or greater expectations (yeah, pun intended) coming into a show than that.

Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, Street Sweeper Social Club: Cricket Pavillion, Phoenix, AZ 5/15/09

After the Nirvana revolution, you couldn’t even get two of those 80’s hair bands on a stage together in any house bigger than 5,000.  Well if you do the decade math and now some of those same bands that rocked big ampitheaters in the 90’s are doing it again today (with the help of $20 lawn and back reserved pavilion tickets).   The one thing is, that of these bands (NIN) sounded mighty relevant while the other (Jane’s Addiction) appeared to be going through the motions on this Phoenix date of the cleverly coined NIN/JA tour.

McDowell Mountain Music Festival: Westworld, Scottsdale, AZ 4/24 & 4/25/09

Thanks to the good guys at Wespac, they have given the Valley two days of much needed roots music. The past six years of the festival have attracted The Black Crowes, Ratdog, Bruce Hornsby, Solomon Burke, Gov’t Mule and Los Lobos to the mainstage.  Let us hope they keep attracting this kind of low-key talent  to safeguard the McDowell Mountain Music Festival as one of the better kept secrets on the festival scene.

Mates of State/Black Kids: Indepedent, San Francisco, CA 4/20/09

Regretfully I must attribute my inability to connect during the Mates of State show to my own personal shortcomings. It could not have been the atmosphere: love, no doubt, was in the air. One expects nothing less from the husband and wife duo who played a double show at the Independent in San Francisco on April 20th and 21st, sharing headlining duties with Jacksonville rockers Black Kids.

Felice Brothers: Higher Ground, South Burlington, VT 4/11/09

Whether or not it gives you pause to consider why so many of this young band's songs contain recurring references to death (“St Stephen's End”), guns (“Hey Hey Revolver”) and alcohol (the two aforementioned), the fact of the matter is the quintet–even without brother Simone who's on a temporary leave from touring  -perform in such a disarming fashion, Felice Brothers can charm you wholly and completely into their world.

Dumpstaphunk: Highline Ballroom, New York, NY 3/27/09

Tickets for Dumpstaphunk's March 27th show at the Highline Ballroom read "Post Allman Brothers Show,” but there were precious few Peachheads present for one A.M. start time or beyond. Not that it mattered because anyone entering the venue would've had the same reaction: an irresistible physical response to the overpowering rhythms exploding from the stage.
