Recordings such as In Concert Brandeis University 1963 are the source of a charisma Bob Dylan still commands today, the likes of which continues to resonate with generations far removed from his own demographic. Originally available only as a value-added piece to The Witmark Demos, this composite of a live show documents the power of Dylan’s performances as well as his compositions of that period, just prior to his breakout beyond the folk genre he would soon redefine.

There was a surprisingly wide spread of ages at Suzanne Vega's recent San Francisco show at the Palace of the Fine Arts, from children to seniors enjoying the two hour-long concert. She split the show into two main sets, followed by a three song encore. She covered the breadth of her catalogue, while also playing two songs from the forthcoming musical Carson McCullers Talks About Love, which she co-wrote with Spring Awakening sensation Duncan Sheik. Sadly, though, she omitted songs from her insanely undervalued third album Days of Open Hand. But, with a collection of songs so rich and compelling, it’s understandable.

American Babies: Flawed Logic

Tom Hamilton is an amazing and underappreciated songwriter. While his work in Brothers Past and American Babies has steadily produced memorable hook after memorable melody across a diverse range of musical styles (from electro jam to indie-electro brooding to pastoral country rock) his name is not particularly well known. Hamilton’s penchant for producing a majestic elegance inside all his musical voices is second to none and on his new American Babies release, Flawed Logic, he further cements his reputation as major talent.

It is amazing how pure distortion can sound when it is distilled through 6-strings at high amplification. Yuck know this and continually present guitar tones that cradle the brain on their self titled first release.

Blackberry Smoke is a fun, full-of-enthusiasm southern rock band out of Atlanta, Georgia. They’ve been humping the venues big and small for the past ten years and have built up quite a faithful following. They rock out and electrify audiences with a style that is infectious and boogie-woogie satisfying. But on this night, the tempo changed. Deciding to go on with the show they walked out on stage with the bare minimum of instruments and announced to the crowd that “it’s good from time to time to play the songs like they were written”; and then proceeded into acoustic versions of some of their most popular tunes.

They were hard to come by, but if you were able to score a ticket to Trey Anastasio’s intimate show at the Music Box on March 4th, consider yourself lucky. The rare west coast appearance proved to be an ebullient occasion that featured two stellar sets, one (mostly) acoustic, the other electric. Trey himself looked healthy, happy and focused, the darker days now seeming to be behind him, and his band sounded as tight as can be and as vibrant as ever.

The album unfolds like a screenplay and when it wraps up with the groups cover of the classic “Irish Rover” you realize Dropkick Murphy’s have crafted one of their fullest and most fulfilling albums of their career.
