Jam Cruise Journal: Laurence’s Big Day
I’d like to start my recap of Day Four of Jam Cruise 8 with the tale of Laurence Scudder of the Ryan Montbleau Band. Back in 1995, I headed up to Saratoga Springs, NY to start school at Skidmore College. The second night of school I met Laurence and we instantly bonded. Within a few days we were nearly inseparable and Larry has been one of my best friends since that second day of Skidmore.
When Laurence and I first hung, he showed me his viola – an instrument I was completely unfamiliar with. Laurence had played in youth orchestras but when I asked him if he jammed he gave me a puzzled look. Laurence was into the Beastie Boys, Tribe Called Quest and other hip-hop acts, yet I saw an opening with his love for Bob Marley. We bonded over some Marley and soon-there-after I played the Harry Hood from Phish’s April 18, 1992 show as his introduction to jam music and he took to it like a fish to water.
We saw all sorts of great jam shows together and more importantly jammed out on our instruments nearly everyday. Laurence has followed his passion for music by joining the Ryan Montbleau Band – a nationally recognized touring act that won the Vote For The Boat contest this year. Day Four was the day of Laurence as he made his presence felt across the boat.
