After 13 shows from March 10 to 26, the Allman Brothers Band’s Beacon run came to a close last Saturday night in New York City. Each and every performance featured at least one guest with many featuring multiple sit-ins.

10. Col. Bruce Hampton and Duane Trucks on Turn On Your Lovelight – March 25
Jam scene fixture Col. Bruce Hampton and ABB guitarist Derek Trucks’ younger brother Duane joined the band for a rollicking version of Turn On Your Lovelight at the Allmans’ penultimate Beacon run show. Hampton hammed up his vocal delivery leading to killer solos by the guitarists.

Nearly six months after rumors started circulating that Phish would throw a festival at Watkins Glen International race track over the Fourth of July Weekend, we finally have an announcement. The festival will be called Super Ball IX and will take place from July 1 – 3 in Watkins Glen, NY.
This marks the first music festival at Watkins Glen since the legendary Summer Jam from 1973 that featured The Band, the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band.
Last month Phish announced the first leg of a summer tour that includes four shows in New York State. We thought perhaps the festival wasn’t going to happen since the band scheduled so many performances within striking distance of the Finger Lakes region. Guess we’ll see how the previous announcement effects attendance at Watkins Glen.
Tickets go on sale this coming Monday, April 4, through Phish’s MusicToday ticketing site. Travel packages are available through CID Entertainment and camping information – including a “tental rental” option – is laid out on the SBIX site.

Now that we’re back and fully recovered from the largest music convention in the country, its time to reflect on exactly what happened to Three Grown Men during their first assignment on the road at SXSW Music in Austin.

When we decided to do SXSW, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew there would be a lot of skinny jeans and flannel -which is not exactly my scene – but most of my apprehension was due to the fact that I didn’t know 97% of the 2,000 bands.
With a cumulative sleep total of 17 hours in over four days, I can honestly say that SXSW is by and far the best music “festival” in the country. First of all the venue is actually the city of Austin. I have never been anywhere where I’ve literally been…everywhere. Indoor venues, outdoor venues, parks, lakes, rivers, monuments, crosswalks; if there was a free space and an open ear, someone was bound to be playing music there. Overall I’d say we covered about 5 miles per day – and we rarely went to the same place twice.
I can’t say for sure how many bands we saw, but I know which ones gave me that “oh wow” feeling. You know the one – it’s that moment where your sense of hearing is so profoundly pleasured by something new that it fires off synapses that would otherwise lay dormant in the comfort of your musical bubble.
