Grace Potter and The Nocturnals: Theatre of Living Arts, Philadelphia, PA 3/11/11

“We finally did it, we finally sold out the TLA!,” Potter said as she thanked fans for spending the evening and staying up late with her and the Nocturnals.  The energy that Grace put forth throughout the entire show was incredible and her passion for music and making music with her friends is a great chemistry to experience live.

3GM: SXSW Day 3 – Beats, Heat and Street Meat

Nobody said it was going to be easy. The sun alone sucks energy out of you, not to mention the combination of constant walking and our search for seven different kinds of rail tequila (side note: we’ve only found three).

[Crowd surfing at MSTRKRFT]

At this point we’re on auto pilot. We’re drones, zombies. The main things that keep us going are Red Bull and disco bass lines. But we love it. There is great music on every corner and everything we discover is something we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. It’s a freak show, a constant party, and we have no idea if the end is in sight. We could do this forever.

Marc’s Musings: Abbey Faux

And in the end…we can all be Fab

The Fab Faux perform Abbey Road @ the Wellmont Theater – Montclair, NJ – March 12

I never hide my aversion to “cover bands.” I mean, it’s one thing to be away on vacation and walk into a sleepy little beach bar and hear some locals playing Bob Marley or Jimmy Buffet and find yourself singing along for an hour. But it’s another thing to make it a regular occurrence. Or better yet, to try and make a career out of it.

So, to answer the question: I am not a fan of Dark Star Orchestra – even though they put a nice twist on the formula – or Sticky Fingers. But as I have mentioned in the past, I am a fan of extremely talented studio and touring musicians getting together occasionally to play the music that inspired them to become who they are today. And under this category, you can file The Fab Faux, maybe the best there is at this “game.”

For over a decade, the band that The Late Show With David Letterman bassist Will Lee put together has been playing music of The Beatles better than anybody. If you were lucky enough to see Beatlemania at The Wintergarden Theater in the ’70s, then you can understand the feeling one gets seeing these guys play live. Jimmy Vivino, known these days as the bandleader for Conan’s Basic Cable Band plays guitar. Along with Lee & Vivino, the band features drummer Rich Pagano, guitar player Frank Agnello and Jack Petruzzelli on keyboards, guitar, bass and anything else needed.

Cover Wars March Madness: Round 1, Pt. 2

Earlier this week we had Part I of Round 1 of this year’s Cover Wars March Madness. Voting is still open for Part I and today you’ve got eight more matchups to vote on. Voting ends on Monday, March 21 at 11:59M PT with the round of 16 posting to follow on Tuesday afternoon.

Matchup #9 (Covers by Phish):

Ramble On (Led Zeppelin)

Phish debuted this cover at Alpine Valley in the Summer of 1998. As most Phish fans know, there has been one other performance ever and it was the following week at Vernon Downs where the band paired Ramble On with their own Slave To The Traffic Light to close the first set. There are some killer Ramble On Teases in the Slave jam. Source: 8-1-1998

VS.

Foreplay/Long Time (Boston)

Phish: The Fall Of 1994 saw Phish mixing things up with their musical genres and instrumentation. The band performed a number of bluegrass classics with keyboardist Page McConnell moving to upright bass, bassist Mike Gordon playing the banjo, guitarist Trey Anastasio simply moved to an acoustic and drummer Jon Fishman playing the washboard (he played mandolin on some other ’94 bluegrass tunes as well). Phish: The Phish bluegrass rendition of Foreplay/Longtime disappeared after 1994 but four and half years later the quartet rolled into Mansfield, Massachusetts (35 miles southwest of the city of Boston) and opened with this electric version. On a personal note, this was the first song I ever saw Phish play live, and it was 11 years ago yesterday. Source: 7-12-1999
