Chicago-based sextet Umphrey’s McGee kicked off UMBowl II last night at Park West around 8PM and by the time the band left the stage for the last time nearly five hours later, the audience had been treated to four “quarters” of music, each with a different theme, they had a hand in creating.
[When Harry Met Sally Parody]
During the first quarter, which was billed as a “Choose Your Own Adventure experience,” fan voting via text message determined the direction the band would go. The audience voted for guitarist Brendan Bayliss to sing the lyrics to In The Kitchen in Spanish, had the band embark on a “Daft Punk-esque” electronica jam out of a cover of Bonafide Lovin’ and even had Umphrey’s finish All In Time from last year’s UMBowl within Q1. The second quarter was a Stew Art event that featured Umphrey’s jamming on descriptions provided by the crowd including “Classical Regulate,” “Tool Meets Umphrey’s” and “I’m In A Video Game.”
For the evening’s third set, Umphrey’s debuted a concept called the “Special Teams Quarter” that saw different lineups on each song performed. While most of the formations stuck to current members of the band, former drummer Mike Mirro replaced current drummer Kris Myers and Jake Cinninger sat out for Much Obliged as done by the group’s 1998 lineup and stuck around to augment the current lineup on the rarely played In Violation of Yes that ended the set. If there was one festival I could go to this summer regardless of my finances or accrued vacation time, I’d be hopping a plane to Japan for the Fuji Rock
Thanks to a gorgeous location, easy-to-maneuver grounds and relaxing vibe, the Newport Folk Festival is one festival that isn’t too dependent on the strength of its lineup. Yet when festival producers put together an impressive bill, the decision to attend becomes even easier. With HT faves Elvis Costello, Amos Lee, The Felice Brothers, Trampled by Turtles, Middle Brother and the PS22 Chorus among the artists scheduled to perform at the 52nd edition of Newport Folk on July 30 and 31, this lineup looks like a winner.
This year’s bill features a nice mix of artists with long, illustrious histories (Earl Scruggs, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Wanda Jackson & Mavis Staples) alongside established folk-rock acts (The Decemberists, Gillian Welch, M. Ward & Gogol Bordello) and up-and-coming rising stars (Carolina Chocolate Drops, Trampled By Turtles & What Cheer? Brigade). We’re especially excited to see that the youngsters of the PS 22 Chorus, fresh off appearances at The Oscars and Madison Square Garden, are making the trip up to Newport this summer.
Here’s a look at the complete initial artist announcement…
The Decemberists, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Gillian Welch, Amos Lee, Earl Scruggs, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Gogol Bordello, M. Ward, Wanda Jackson, Mavis Staples, Tegan & Sara, The Felice Brothers, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Justin Townes Earle, Delta Spirit, Middle Brother, The Wailin’ Jennys, Freelance Whales, The Secret Sisters, Trampled by Turtles, The Civil Wars, The Head & The Heart, Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three, The Cave Singers, What Cheer? Brigade, Mountain Man, David Wax Museum, Devil Makes Three, Song Circle with Dar Williams Ellis Paul John Gorka & Liz Queler, Typhoon, The Seeger Clogging All-Stars, The Ebony Hillbillies, BrownBird, River City Extension and PS 22

Last week, we kicked off the beginning of Cover Wars March Madness by announcing our first ever “play-in” game. We took ten covers that had not previously participated in a Cover Wars and let the readers select up to three for automatic entry into this year’s tournament.
The winners of the play-in round are:
1) Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney) as performed by Perpetual Groove
2) Across 110th Street (Bobby Womack) as performed by My Morning Jacket
3) FM (Steely Dan) as performed by 2D (Gorillaz) featuring Nathain Haines
The other 29 entries already gained entry into the tournament the conventional way – by winning a Cover Wars in the past year. Now that we’ve got our 32 covers selected, let’s take a look at the matchups…

The Black Crowes – Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
In addition to performing the song live, The Black Crowes also contributed a studio take to this 1995 disc for NORML that also includes Gov’t Mule performing Don’t Step On The Grass, Sam, and Widespread Panic’s studio take of And It Stoned Me, amongst other tracks.
