The summer concert season is upon us and the Hidden Track staff know that it’s virtually impossible for us to afford every show we want to hit, and still be able to pay our insanely expensive New York City rents. Luckily for us, there are a plethora of fantastic free concerts throughout the summer that don’t cost a dime. We decided to weed through all the listings and present to you our 3rd Annual NYC Free Summer Concert Picks. Let’s take a look…

Where: The Beach @ Governors Island
When: Sunday, July 4, Beach Opens At 10 AM, Show 4 PM
Official Info: She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. They occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright. What began as a fascinating, no-strings attached collaboration on 2008’s Volume One has evolved into a bona fide, touring band, and She & Him are here to stay. Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward are as comfortable and complementary a musical pair as Les Paul and Mary Ford; hearing them again on Volume Two feels like getting together with two old friends. This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. But, as with Volume One, the prevailing mood is bittersweet, dreamy, and romantic.

Before jaunting across the pond, Dr. Dog brought their rambling road show to Terminal 5 in NYC, making it the largest venue they have yet to headline in this town, and by the packed house of chanting fans, bigger things may be in their near future.
As I always say, I’m at the mercy of what tapes are available when I put this piece together, and I had a great selection to choose from this time around especially when tapes popped up of rarely recorded acts like Iron & Wine & Local Natives. But don’t you worry, Hidden Track isn’t forgetting where we came from – we’ve got the likes of Tim Palmieri, Todd Stoops & Jennifer Hartswick to contribute a jammed out cover of Billy Cobham’s Red Baron.

Well it only took about four years, but Brendan Bayliss & Jeff Austin have finally released their studio album. The selected audio features a Modest Mouse cover and one of Brendan’s contributions to the album. I cut out some banter in between the tracks, there was some nonsense in there about maple syrup, download the show if you want to hear it. 30db next plays May 19th at the Fox Theatre in Boulder.

With their latest album Shame, Shame, Dr. Dog take a step into themselves as we receive the voice of modern working class psychedelia. With every album, it’s not so much the cliché that they are moving forward as they are exploring different aspects of the music they create: lo-fi records, hi-fi records, indie, pop, psychedelic.
With the 2010 baseball season in full swing, we wanted to continue a Hidden Track tradition started in 2007 where we chat with of our favorite musicians about their love for America’s past time. For the first part of this year’s Baseball Preview, we asked them for predictions on the 2010 season, while the second part of our questionnaire gets a bit more personal.

Hidden Track: What team do you think will win the World Series?
Zach Miller: Hmmm. I’m not good at predictions but as a Phillies fan I have to say they have an awesome team and I think they’ll win the World Series again. I’ll be rooting for them. I think Chase Utley is due for MVP. He’s always been a solid player and he’s been hitting with a lot of power these past few seasons.
HT: What’s your favorite baseball team?
ZM: Phillies are my favorite team.
