Furthur @ Madison Square Garden, November 20-21

It’s been quite a year for Furthur in every aspect including the size of the venues the group has been playing. Just four months ago, this post-Grateful Dead act offered two performances at the 2,100-capacity Best Buy Theater in New York City. This past weekend, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh brought their latest project to the 20,000 seats at Madison Square Garden for two nights. Both shows were different in everything from the flow of the setlists, to the crowd and band’s energy. It has been said that when the Garden is full of enthusiasm, magic does happen and that was indeed the case for Furthur.
Night one consisted of a monstrous first set that included a Help On The Way, Slipknot! and Shakedown Street combination that shook the entire arena with merciless energy between the crowd and the music. The rest of the set continued the Grateful Dead repertoire’s standard of crisp jams and stellar vocals, though there was a minor flub in El Paso. However, the Terrapin Station Suite closer was the highlight of the set as the 23-minute sequence brought silence and focus from the attentive crowd.
The second set of Saturday’s concert provided a more psychedelic vibe to the atmosphere mainly controlled by bassist Phil Lesh. He seemed to stop and start the songs, leading the way to the next jam or pushing the improvisation to the next level. This was clear on songs like Saint Stephen and from the way Millennium Jam segued into The Eleven, consisting of an increase in the tempo to bring up the intensity of the jams.

Last night was a sad night in Upstate New York as area promoter Greg Bell put on what looks to be the last jam-filled evening at Revolution Hall in Troy, where the McLovins and 7 Walkers featuring Bill Kreutzmann and George Porter Jr. capped an illustrious history of jamband shows at the storied venue. Revolution Hall in Troy, New York, has seen many acts grace its stage since it opened in 2003. Over the past seven years it has presented an array of performers from nationally touring acts like Umphrey’s McGee and Mike Gordon to younger local bands like the McLovins, who are just gaining momentum in their respective scenes. The stage at Revolution Hall has seen a multitude of musicians, engineers and concert-goers, and leaves behind memories in the hearts of many. “When you walked [into Rev Hall] you could smell all of the good times and amazing music that happened in that space…” reminisces Taraleigh Silberberg, publisher and live music fan.
The venue itself is not inexperienced to change as well. Many changes in management and ownership have occurred in the short seven years it has been open for business – and it looks like one last big change is about to take place. Early next month, Rev Hall will close its doors with nondescript plans for the future; A change which has left many patrons and fans wondering what the future holds for the venue.
Originally opened by Brown’s Brewing Company, Rev Hall has conducted business in an ambitious, eager – if not hyperactive – way. Through the passing of the torch, the overall vision for the venue became a shape-shifter, rendering it difficult for it to grow in any particular direction. With the most recent change this past January placing the management power back in the hands of Brown’s Brewing Company, it seems the identity of Rev Hall morphed for the last time.

Official Info: She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. They occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright. What began as a fascinating, no-strings attached collaboration on 2008’s Volume One has evolved into a bona fide, touring band, and She & Him are here to stay. Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward are as comfortable and complementary a musical pair as Les Paul and Mary Ford; hearing them again on Volume Two feels like getting together with two old friends. This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. But, as with Volume One, the prevailing mood is bittersweet, dreamy, and romantic.
