MP3 Boot Camp: Patagonia Music Benefit

The clothing company Patagonia has teamed up with some of our favorite bands to launch the Patagonia Music Collective with proceeds to benefit non-profit environmental groups. Acts such as moe., Umphrey’s McGee, Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson and Medeski, Martin and Wood are participating by making an exclusive track available for purchase ($.99 each) through the Patagonia Music Website.

For this week’s Boot Camp column, we wanted to point you in the direction of five Patagonia Music Collective tracks that are well worth the buck…

Umphrey’s finally offers a studio version of a track that predates the band.

Pearl Jam kicks down a live version of this classic track from its debut LP.

moe. share a Chuck Garvey-written original called One Life that the band debuted at Summer Camp last year. Back on January 31st, moe. performed One Life and seven other originals at the Patagonia World Headquarters in Ventura, CA. Head over to Jambands.com to read Garvey’s take on the genesis of One Life. California rockers Toad The Wet Sprocket have made an exclusive acoustic take from 1991’s Fear LP available for purchase.

Jazz guitarist John Scofield shares a previously unreleased studio track.

Stone Gossard – Round Four Of Brad

With Pearl Jam taking a breather, Stone Gossard has had the opportunity to get back together with his friends in Brad, to finally release their fourth full length CD Best Friends?, and head out on the road for some shows across the United States. It’s a strong recording, with songs that are moody and spirited, a little funky here and a little psychedelic there.

Last Week’s Sauce: June 28th – July 4th

Happy Belated Independence Day Hidden Track readers. Over the weekend there were enough Rock & Roll Fireworks and renditions of The Star Spangled Banner to last a lifetime. We’ll go relatively easy on the patriotic front and we’ll get right down to business.

Artist & Title: moe. – Nebraska, Ugly American
Date & Venue: 2010-07-04 Stone Pony – Asbury Park, NJ
Taper & Show Download: The Other Scott Bernstein

The best way for me to select tracks for Last Week’s Sauce is when I steal the ideas from my friends. When I saw ScottyB (not the ScottyB who taped this show) send out over his Facebook feed, “can’t believe moe. busted out Ugly American. Been waiting 14 years for that one.” – I knew immediately what one of the bands for this piece would be. moe. plays tonight at the LC Outdoor Pavilion in Columbus, OH.

Last Week’s Sauce: May 17th – 23rd

It’s mostly a Rock & Roll recap here at Last Week’s Sauce. Notably, three of the bands (Blues Traveler, Pearl Jam, and Ween) all had their major studio debuts within one year of each other in 1990-1991. We round things out from the likes of jamband supergroup 30db covering Wilco and Keller Williams collaborating with his friends The Keels.

Artist & Title: 30db – Handshake Drugs
Date & Venue: 2010-05-22 Berbati’s Pan – Portland, OR
Taper & Show Download: Mark Burgin

In the first edition of Last Week’s Sauce of the month we led off with a couple of tracks from 30db, which would normally mean I would ignore any new tapes that popped up. But a cover of Wilco’s Handshake Drugs is the type of thing we make exceptions for. Brendan Bayliss takes lead vocals on this one just a few months after Umphrey’s McGee debuted their cover of Wilco’s I Am Trying To Break Your Heart on Valentine’s Day. For the time being the full-band 30db gigs have past, but there is still one more chance to see Brendan Bayliss & Jeff Austin play the tunes from One Man Show: Thursday night at Summer Camp at 8pm at the Campfire stage.

The B List: Eight Bands That Could Charge More For Tickets But Don’t

There are some artists who have no qualms selling tickets to their shows for whatever the market will bear. Yet, there are a select few who do their best to keep prices under control, regardless of whether they could make an extra few million dollars by charging an extra $10 or $20. This week’s B List looks at eight major bands that could charge more for ducats but don’t.

While none of these bands are “pulling a Fugazi” – a group who famously did their best to keep prices to $5 per show – these acts are clearly leaving money on the table and should be applauded for doing so.

8. Ben Harper – Average Ticket Price = $33.82

When Ben Harper put together his latest band – Relentless7 – he played a number of shows at intimate venues as a warm up before the group tackled more high-profile gigs. Ben’s fanbase is extremely loyal and passionate. If he wanted to charge $50 a ticket for these smaller shows, no one would’ve batted an eye. Yet most ticket prices for these shows were under $20. A classy move by a classy artist.

7. Vampire Weekend – Average Ticket Price = $26.97

Over the past two years Vampire Weekend has blown up beyond anybody’s expectations. Despite ridiculous demand for tickets to their shows, VW has kept average ticket prices under $30 leading to sell outs across the country.

Cover Wars: Baba O’Riley Edition

[Originally Published: October 6, 2009]

Baba O’Riley is the first track on the 1971 album Who’s Next by legendary British rockers The Who. Did you know that the song’s title is a reference to both Meher Baba and Terry Riley? I did not until today.

Cover Wars

I don’t know about you, but when writing this I kept having memories of a scene in Freaks and Geeks when Seth Rogen’s character scolds Lindsay Weir for referring to this song as Teenage Wasteland. I would wager a number of our readers have had a similar experience.
