Cover Wars: Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)

The timeline for Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn) is a bit more complicated than most Cover Wars because while the song was written by Bob Dylan, Manfred Mann officially released their cover of it two years before it would appear on Bob Dylan’s album Self Portrait. The song was written and first played with The Band during the recording sessions for The Basement Tapes, but the version penned during that session would not be released until 1985 as part of the Biograph release. Further complicating things, when Manfred Mann recorded the song they simply titled it Mighty Quinn. The song gets named a LOT of different ways.

The Contestants:

The Britpop band Cornershop released this cover on their 2009 release Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast. The entire album is recommended listening, and if you like what you hear, be sure to give their 1997 album When I Was Born For The 7th Time a listen as well.

Poll: Grading Leg II of Phish Tour

Phish Summer Tour 2010 came to a close last night at Jones Beach on Long Island and now it’s time to start analyzing the 11-show second leg of the group’s excursion. Back in July we asked our readers to grade the first leg of the tour and a resounding 90% gave the quartet a B+ or above. How will they do this time? We’d like to find out with your help.

Phish: Jones Beach, Wantagh, NY 8/17/10

Closing this summer where they basically began last summer, Tuesday night’s fans were offered the perfect benchmark to see how far Phish has really come in their first year back.  The Jones Beach ‘09 run showed great promise, featured a few debuts that are now set staples, and gave a glimmer of hope that the band was taking this third time around with a revived focus and commitment.  One year later, all of that has apparently changed.  People working the lot for a ticket were shutout, concise ‘09 debuts are being stretched and explored, and from the opening notes of “Fluffhead,” they delivered a top-to-bottom blowout that offered a heated first set and a second set that dipped into Type II territory.

Best of Cover Wars: On Your Way Down

[Originally Published: December 1, 2009]

On Your Way Down was originally released on Allen Toussaint’s 1972 album Life, Love and Faith. It’s OK if you thought this was written by Little Feat, because a lot of people do. Little Feat recorded their studio version just months after Toussaint and put it on their record Dixie Chicken.

The Contestants:

Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint: I’m always torn on whether or not to include tracks like this in Cover Wars. That is, covers that also feature the original recording artist. But in this case, Elvis Costello handles the lead vocal duties for the duration of the song, plus it’s an amazing take – so it would be a shame not to include it. If you’re not familiar with this CD/DVD, it’s amazing – would make a good holiday gift. Source: The River In Reverse

Phish @ Deer Creek – Night Two: Setlist

Phish returned to Deer Creek for the second of two shows at the site of many special evenings in Phish history. Night two was a much more cohesive affair featuring two sets filled with numerous highlights.

The Chalk Dust opener gave the band a chance to find their footing early. Instead of guitarist Trey Anastasio ripping through a solo the jam was more of a conversation with Mike, Page and Fish each adding interesting accents. Guelah Papyrus made its 2010 debut and was nailed unlike many of the songs in the previous night’s opening stanza. My Sweet One, Axilla and I Didn’t Know found their way to the stage for the first time this tour before Walls of the Cave returned after being shelved since Coventry.

Walls of the Cave didn’t get much of a reaction from the crowd on a night when the audience gave the band lots of love. Phish clearly practiced the complex tune and did a good job moving through each of the parts. Stash seemed shorter than usual and didn’t get too far out there. A pretty Train Song followed and perfunctory versions of Backwards Down the Number Kine and Ocelot came next. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s The Ballad of Curtis Loew continues its comeback and might now be a full fledged “once a tour” part of the repertoire. I can’t imagine ever getting sick of hearing Page sing the tune and Trey rip up the solo. Wilson and Possum ended a solid set and both whipped the crowd into a frenzy.

Phish @ Deer Creek – Night One: Setlist

Phish Summer Tour 2010 moved on to Noblesville this evening for another summer night at Deer Creek. Tonight’s performance featured two sets that were about as different as two sets in one show can be.

Runaway Jim kicked things off before Punch followed. Here’s where the troubles began as guitarist Trey Anastasio fudged a few lines and tried to end the song earlier than it should have been ended. A few mistakes here and there are part of the experience but Sample, Horn and Sugar Shack all suffered from trainwreck moments and they seemed to have forgotten how to end Cars Trucks Buses. The band didn’t seem visibly flustered and pulled things together for Wolfman’s and the difficult Time Turns Elastic. Trey led the way on Wolfman’s firing off one blistering run of notes after another – a highlight of the set.

Pretty quickly it was obvious the second set would be a completely different animal than the underwhelming opening stanza. Second set opener Drowned continues its role as a quick springboard to improvisation. Page McConnell switched between piano for the rocking start, organ to help push the jam outwards and synth once the improv got out there. All four members gelled during the last few minutes of the jam and no one member was leading the ambient exploration that marked the all-too-soon end of Drowned. Gotta Jibboo came out of nowhere and was a typical ripping version.
