For the 22nd year in a row, the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam returned to the guitarist’s hometown of Asheville, NC last night with this year’s event taking place at the Asheville Civic Center. Yesterday’s event saw the debut of the Warren Haynes Band and sets from Missing Cats featuring JoJo Hermann and Sherman Ewing, prog-jammers Umphrey’s McGee, classic rockers the Steve Miller Band, Widespread Panic frontman John Bell, the Gregg Allman Band and a late-night thrown down from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Haynes offered tracks from his upcoming soul album backed by Ron Johnson on bass, Ivan Neville on keys and vocals, Ron Holloway on sax, Terrance Higgins on drums and Ruthie Foster on vocals. Bassist George Porter Jr., keyboardist Ian McLagan and drummer Raymond Weber were featured on the album according to the Relix article announcing the band but did not perform with Warren last night. There were plenty of guest spots throughout the evening including John Bell adding vocals to Umphrey’s version of Ain’t No Sunshine, Andy Farag and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band Horns sitting in at points with the Warren Haynes Band, Haynes returning the favor by joining the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Steve Miller Band. Also, South American harpist Carlos Reyes sat in with the Steve Miller Band, Ron Holloway and the DDBB Horns added brass to Gregg Allman’s Just Another Rider, while John Bell joined the horn section for Allman’s take on Guilded Splinters before Steve Miller sat in on Lost Highway.

Phish Fall Tour 2010 has reached its final destination – Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Tonight marks the first of three sold-out shows at the venue.

There aren’t many photos that circulate among fans of the Quintet Era of Phish that started at keyboardist Page McConnell’s first show on May 3, 1985 and ended with guitarist Jeff Holdsworth’s departure from the band shortly after his last show on May 17, 1986. So we were excited to come across an amazing shot of the five-piece from an Earth Day Celebration at UVM on April 15, 1986 via the Oh Kee Pah Blog Facebook Page.

You’ll notice McConnell using milk crates as a seat – how very Vermont of him – and playing nothing but an electric piano and cheap organ. The shot above was first posted on Facebook by Phish fan Chris DiLeo and comes from the collection of Daniel Marshall, though Rich Wallace actually snapped the photo. We asked Chris if there was more where this photo came from and he shared another picture from ’86 and a pair of Phish pics from Spring ’88.

Just as quickly as it started, the Greek Theatre run that kicked off the second leg of Phish Summer Tour 2010 in Berkeley, CA has just come to a close.

Lollapalooza has never been a quick jaunt around Grant Park.
Try to see too many of the 126 bands and DJs performing at the ever-growing festival behemoth, and much will be missed getting to and from stage to stage. But this year, a new addition to the grounds made it easier to trek from north to south with ease compared to past years. The grounds were extended west toward Michigan Avenue, giving all attendees the use of Columbus Drive as a walkway.
So with the welcome drop in humidity on Friday and more room to maneuver on the grounds, Lolla Day One started off with soul. Raphael Saadiq on the south big stage was a good warm up with horns blazing while he sang, but I only caught a minute before jogging up north to see Mavis Staples.
A major force behind 60 years of gospel, blues and soul singing, Mavis Staples rallied the growing Lollapalooza crowd as if she was still teaching The Band how to sing. The group’s harmonies during The Weight brought me chills as Mavis and crew belted out reflections of pain and struggle. Jeff Tweedy appeared to play guitar on a song from the group’s new album he produced, but he knew to just let Mavis do the singing. Her voice still rich and striking after decades kept the crowd focused.

Camp Bisco 9 @ Indian Lookout Country Club – July 15-17
It seems that every year the Disco Biscuits bassist Marc Brownstein starts the last set of the weekend by commenting, “This Was The Best Camp Bisco Yet!” and yes, this year it rings truer than ever.
From the eclectic artists who kept the music flowing – about 48 hours in total – all weekend long to the new art installations which dazzled and entranced attendees, there was more action at Camp Bisco 9 than ever. While the Biscuits were only able to complete five of their six sets scheduled for the weekend – one set was lost due to safety concerns from heavy lightning – there was no shortage of music to keep you moving all day and night long. While the main focus of the festival seems to be turning to more of an electronic mix, there was much more than just DJs spinning over the weekend.
There were a few major changes that dramatically increased the amount of music that you could see over the weekend. Following the catastrophic rains that left last year’s Dance Tent anything but functional, the tent, which showcases DJs all weekend long and provides late night music till 4AM, was moved to a better location closer to the road up the path from the main stage. Also, a second stage was added adjacent to the Main Stage allowing bigger acts to play back to back without breaking for set changes. The Silent Disco debuted this year giving fans another great late night option that ran just short of sunrise. Other fun additions to the landscape at the Indian Lookout Country Club included performances each night by the Philadelphia Experiment – a dance troupe that included fire dancers, fire hoopers and poi spinners.
Thursday, July 15
On Thursday afternoon, Rubblebucket’s Kalmia Traver rocked a sax that was about the same size as her and the band brought a funky Jazz vibe to Camp Bisco. Many fans soon pushed on to the Dance Tent to dance with Orchard Lounge, who showed that no matter what time it is if you are ready to throw down some hot tracks, people will be there to hear it. Even with a five hour wait to enter the venue, there was no shortage of fans checking out what was their first set of the weekend. Never an act to rest on their laurels, OL also played the VIP tent vs. Magner and the Silent Disco. Pretty Lights took the stage after the Biscuits’ first set of the weekend with their Finally Moving Remix featuring an Etta James sample that had the whole crowd singing along. LCD Soundsystem closed the main stage on Night One by giving props to New York with a combination of New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down and Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind.
