Garage a Trois: Always Be Happy But Stay Evil

With its fifth release, Garage a Trois has crafted an album destined to go down as one of the best instrumental releases of the last couple decades. That may sound a tad hyperbolic, but Always Be Happy but Stay Evil showcases the extraordinary range of four musicians at the top of their respective games.

Last Week’s Sauce: September 20th – 26th

It’s a mostly Rock and Roll edition of Last Week’s Sauce today. Luckily we have the funky Stanton Moore Trio to break things up for us and we lead off with an absolutely amazing cover recently added to Built To Spill’s repertoire. Umphrey’s McGee and Wilco both do what they do best to round us out and that is what you get for your hour’s worth of music.

Of course, you can download all of this week’s audio in one easy to listen to MP3 that we call the Last Week’s Sauce Podcast, click here to download.

Built To Spill – The Plan, Ripple
Date & Venue: 2010-09-19 The Beaumont – Kansas City, MO
Taper & Show Download: TEAM KANSASOURI

“The New Grateful Dead” has been tossed about in the past describing Built To Spill, it’s a comparison that a lot of Deadheads completely don’t understand – but I think it has some merit once you get past the obvious differences in overall sound. Well this tour, which is massive by the way with very few days off, they have been playing Ripple. The cover starts off slow and somewhat true to the original, but by the end it is a full-on rocker. I hope you don’t mind, but since Built To Spill tends to take a lot of time between songs, I have removed a big chunk of dead space between these two tunes. BTS [tour dates] plays the first of two shows at The Paradise in Boston tonight. I’ll see ‘ya there tomorrow.

Stanton Moore Trio: Paradise Club, Boston, MA 9/21/10

Fresh off a summer tour with his band Galactic, Stanton Moore kicked off a new run with The Stanton Moore Trio. The first stop was Boston for a gig at the newly renovated and expanded Paradise Club. The current Trio lineup was to include Will Bernard on guitar and Robert Walter on the Hammond B-3, with Stanton behind his Gretsch kit, but on the Boston show at least, the B-3 was handled by Wil Blades.

Garage a Trois: The Compound, Scottsdale, AZ 8/17/10

Supporting their most recent effort Power Patriot that came out in late 2009 on the stellar Royal Potato Family label, Garage A Trois made no reservations about being playing the part of entertainers. With two one hour sets, the quartet put whimsicality and energy first, while placing compositional perfection somewhere down the priority line, but it didn’t matter – this is a live band and these four guys toss any preconceived jazz notions by way of prog and rock leanings.

Garage a Trois: Power Patriot

With Power Patriot, the realigned Garage a Trois attempt to answer the musical question: "Is there life after Charlie Hunter?" The seven-string samurai has been part of this band's lineup since its inception a decade ago and his replacement by Marco Benevento fundamentally alters the sound of the quartet. This music is definitely less dependent on groove though it carries just as much visceral impact (and in your face, not through insinuation).

Garage a Trois – Heavy Hitting With Skerik

Garage a Trois is a band which at first could be thought of as an all-star band of heavy hitters, but that would be a severe understatement. The band, which started as a trio consisting of saxophonist Skerik, guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter, and drummer Stanton Moore, later adding vibraphonist Mike Dillon, has grown into a tightly structured, well oiled funk beast. Hunter is no longer part of the group, in that slot is one of the most in demand keyboard players around, Marco Benevento, who permanently joined the group in 2007.
